G.M. Durrani songs


A very famous Indian playback singer in Hindi movies in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, G.M. Durrani was a prominent playback singer. He was first noticed by a very famous film producer named Sohrab Modi when he saw him singing a song. He became impress with his voice and later decided to give him a chance around 1935-36 in the movie ‘Saaed-e-Hawas’. There he first sang the song for music director Bundu Khan popularly known as “Taan-Talwar” Bundu Khan. The first ever song which he sang in the movie was a ghazal, “Mastonko Shem Farz Hai Peena Sharab Ka Gutti Mein Meri Padh Gaya Qatara Sharab Ka”. At that time there was no concept of playback singing but when it started, he was the first to lend his voice for a film titled Bahurani.

The music director of that movie was famous Rafeeq Gazanavi who directed him. In the meanwhile, Durrani also had started to work with AIR as a fulltime artist. At that time, there was no permission of recording privately by the Britishers. But Rafeeq Saab insisted and later Durrani was permissioned on some conditions. Thereafter he sang for among others, noted music directors like Naushad, Shankar Rao Vyas and A. R. Qureshi. He sang for several hit movies of that time such as Mirza Ghalib, Humlog, Magroor, Shama, Namaste, Sabak and scores of others. By the time, he started to gain respect in the industry for his magical voice which he spread over the years. Later he became a popular celebrity as a playback singer and also the inspiration source of many upcoming singers in the industry.

Many singers started their careers with him and he inspired many others too. One of his admirer was legendary Mohammd Rafi Saheb who imitated him in the initial days. In the year 1944, Durrani sang the song “Aji Dil Ho Kaaboo Mein” in the movie ‘Gaon Ki Gori‘ which also became very popular. Also the song “Ae Chorre Ki Jaat Badi Bewafa” became hit which he sang in the same movie. Durrani sahab has sung many songs during his career but his output later reduced. Later he visited Hajj and after that decided not to sing anymore. Later Mohammad Rafi then helped him get back to singing but by then his career was over.
