Legendary bollywood actor, Manoj Kumar was born on July 24th, 1937 at Abbottabad, Hazara Division, British India now is located within the borders of Pakistan. He was born as Harikishan Giri Goswami in a Hindu family. He was only ten years of age when he alongwith his family had to move to India due to the partition. After that they settled in Hanumangarh district which is in Rajasthan. Later he completes his graduation from Hindu College, University of Delhi and decided to enter the film industry. He has married to Shashi Goswami who is originally from Jodhkan, Sirsa district, Haryana and also has a son named Kunal Goswami. His brother named Rajiv Goswami and his son also entered the film industry. There is an interesting fact that he has named himself as Manoj Kumar after superstar Dilip Kumar’s character which he had played in 1949 movie Shabnam.
Manoj Kumar entered in the film industry in the years 1957 where he gets a small role and makes little-noticed debut. He gets his major role in the 1960 movie, Kaanch Ki Gudia in which he played opposite actress Sayeeda Khan. By the time his career becomes stable in the industry and the movies ‘Piya Milan Ki Aas’ and ‘Reshmi Roomal’ which followed the latter movie setting the stage for the next movie in 1962 titled ‘Hariyali Aur Raasta‘. His role of Shanker in that movie was highly appretiated. Later his some hits were Raj Khosla’s Woh Kaun Thi, in 1964 and Vijay Bhatt’s ‘Himalaya Ki God Mein’ in 1965. In the later part of his career, he got famous as a patriotic hero when he played in the movie ‘Shaheed’ in 1965. He was also approached by the Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1965 and asked him to create a film based on the popular slogan ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kissan’.
Manoj Kumar got charged and also it was his directorial debut movie titled ‘Upkar‘ in 1967 which proved to be the turning point of his career. He once again returned to the patriotic theme after dabbling in various roles in late 1960s. As a result ‘Purab Aur Paschim‘ in 1970 was one of the superhit movies of that time. In mid 1970s he once again bounced when he gave three back to back movies titled Roti ‘Kapda Aur Makaan’ (1974), ‘Sanyasi‘ (1975) and ‘Dus Numbari’ (1976). By 1980s he has reached to the top where he also got the chance to direct his idol, Dilip Kumar. His last hit was ‘Kranti‘ in 1981 and after that his career started to decline. His acting trademark, a hand covering the face, was very popular though it has also been the target of satirists. He has also won Filmfare Best Actor Award for Be-Imaan.
