A very beautiful and prominent actress of Hindi Cinema named Nargis was born on June 1st, 1929 at Calcutta, West Bengal, British India. She was born to the family of Uttamchand Mohanchand who was a Hindu Mohyal and mother, Jaddanbai who was an Allahabad-based Muslim singer. She had a brother named Anwar Hussain who was also a film actor. Her childhodd name was Fatima who later turned upto Nargis on the screen. She is widely regarded as one of the greatest actresses in the history of Hindi cinema. She married Sunil Dutt on March 11th, 1958 and later became mother of three children. She has two daughters named Namrata and Priya and has a son named Sanjay Dutt who is also a famous bollywood superstar. It is said that Sunil Dutt has saved her life during the fire accident on the sets of Mother India and she gets impress with this and married him. She was also involved in social causes and became the first patron of The Spastics Society of India.

Nargis was among the most successful actresses of her time who had appeared in several successful movies. She started her film career at the age of six when she first got to act in the movie ‘Talashe Haq’ in 1935. She was credited as Baby Nargis in the film which means “Narcissus” the flower. Then she appeared at the age of fourteen in ‘Taqdeer‘ in 1943 opposite Motilal. That was her first movie of her adult age after which she won lasting fame. She starred in many popular Hindi-Urdu movies of the late 1940s and 1950s such as Barsaat (1949), Andaz (1949), Awaara (1951), Deedar (1951), Shree 420 (1955) and Chori Chori (1956). At that time, she was frequently starred opposite famous actors Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar. But she was shot to fame with the Oscar-nominated rural drama movie ‘Mother India‘ in 1957 for which she also won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her performance.

Later in next year 1958 she married with actor Sunil Dutt and gave up her film career after her last few film releases to settle down with her family. She was last appeared in the year 1967 with the movie ‘Raat Aur Din‘ for which she won a National Film Award for Best Actress. She became the first actress of bollywood to win in this category. She was also nominated for a Filmfare Best Actress Award for this movie. Not only this she also got the Padma Shri in 1958 and became the first personality to be conferred the award. She had formed Ajanta Arts Cultural Troupe alongwith her husband which performed at the border areas. After many years, she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and underwent treatment at Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York. Later she returned to India and again admitted in Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai where she sank into a coma and passed away on May 3rd, 1981.
