One of the famous names of playback singer is Amit Kumar Ganguly who was born on July 3rd, 1952. He is the son of famous singer and actor Kishore Kumar and Bengali singer and actress Ruma Guha Thakurta. He is very similar to his father as he also used to sing in Kolkata during Durga Pooja functions. He loves singing from his childhood. Once Amit was performing in Kolkata in a Durga Pooja function which was Bengali actor Uttam Kumar. He was singing filmy songs there and this was complained to his father by his mother. Later Kishore Kumar decided to bring him to Mumbai. He was very popular in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and sings even today. Also he has rendered many hit songs to the successful bollywood movies. He made his debut as a child actor in ‘Door Ka Rahi’ in 1971. There he sang ‘Main Panchi Matwaala Re’ in the movie but later the song was removed from the film.

His official debut in the industry was in 1976 with the movie ‘Balika Badhu‘. In the movie he sang the song ‘Bade Acche Lagate Hain’ which was composed by R.D. Burman. In 1970s, he sang in very few films such as ‘Kasme Vaade’, ‘Aandhi’, ‘Khatta Meetha’, ‘GolMaal’, ‘Des Pardes‘, ‘Ganga Ki Saugandh’, ‘Deewanagi’, ‘Duniya Meri Jeb Mein’, ‘Parvarish’, ‘Baaton Baaton Mein’ etc. His song ‘Aati Rahengi Baharein’ from Kasme Vaade was a huge hit which helped him in making his own identity. He has also sang a duet with Lata Mangeshkar which was ‘Uthe Sabke Kadam’ in the movie ‘Baaton Baaton Mein’ which also became quite popular. He has sang mainly for Kumar Gaurav and Anil Kapoor. The start of 1980s for him was with a bang. He sang all the songs in the movie ‘Love Story’ which proved to be a mega hit. He has also got his Filmfare Award for the song ‘Yaad Aa Rahi Hai’ with Lata Mangeshkar. Two other superhit films were Qurbani (1980) and Haadsaa (1983).

His start of 1990s was again very good as he started with the song ‘Sanam Mere Sanam’ in Hum. He sang for many hit movies in 1990s such as Awwal Number, ChaalBaaz, Khel, Vishwatma, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Judaai, Indrajeet etc. Later after mid 1990s, his career graph started to decline. Therefore he withdrawed from the movies and made himself more busy in live stage performances in various parts of the world. He also composed and released his music albums which were not much successful. Later in 2000s he once again appeared to sing in ‘Jhankar Beats’ in the year 2003. The movie was inspired by R.D. Burman. In year 2006, the film Apna Sapna Money Money carried a song ‘Dil Mein Baji Guitar‘ was a big hit which was sang by him.
