Amol Palekar was born in a Marathi speaking family on novenber 24, 1944 in Mumbai. He was a well known actor of 70s and later on he became the director of notable hindi and marathi cinema. He attended the Sir J.J.School of art. He started his theater career with the Marathi experimental stage with Satyadev Dubey and later started his own group ‘Aniket’ set up in 1972. He introduced Theater of the absurd in Maharashtra and a street theater-inspired practice of performing plays in the round. He made his debut in 1971 with noted Marathi film, Shantata! Court Chalo Aahe directed by Satyadev Dubev, which started the ‘New Cinema’ movement in Marathi.

The first in which he act as an acter by Basu Chatterjee in Rajnigandha an it was the hit movie of minimal budget and in Chhoti Si Baat. After this movie he got many such roles in middle class comedy movies from which most of the movies were directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee such as Golmaal and Naram Garam. In 1982 he played the role of “Ravi Chettan” in the Malayalam movie Olangal. Palekar has exhibited his sketches, drawings, and paintings in Bombay. He also does some social work. He is famous for his image of “Middle-class man” who struggles to get a job. His acting is naturalistic & understated. He always opposed to the melodramatic, histrionic performances in Bollywood. He uses set-pieces which have become audience favorites. In his career he has never portrayed a Muslim or a Sikh character. He started his career as a director with the Marathi film Aakriet.

He proved his capabilities as a director through his movie Paheli which was India’s official entry for Best Foreign Film at the 2006 Oskar. Mumbai actress Manisha Koirala was over joyed when she was offered a role by actor and director Amol Palekar in his new film. But later she refused to accept the role because her role in the movie was very short infact there were only two scenes for her in the film. It was an interesting character, that of a Buddhist monk. Now the role has gone to Antara Mali who was last seen in Ram Gopal Varma’s Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon and Naach. As a director he has done many films like Shrimaan Shrimati in 1983, Bhumika in 1982 with Smita Patil, Naseeruddin Shah, Anant Nag, Meri Biwi ki Shadi, Damaad and many more films. As a director his film was Bangarwali, Kairee, Quest which is an English film and many more in which Kal Ka Aadmi won the National Award for Best film on family welfare and Quest which is an English film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in English.
