Songs of Asha Parekh
One of the top stars in Hindi Cinema named Asha Parekh was born on October 2nd, 1942 at Bhavnagar in Gujarat. She was born into a middle-class Gujarati family to a hindu father and muslim mother. She worships Sai Baba from her childhood and always been the centre of her parents in her childhood. She joined Indian classical dance classes in her early age and later also performed at stage shows and private functions. Asha has remained unmarried as everyone hesitate in asking her hand in marriage due to of being unapproachable. It is also said she was romantically involved with director Nasir Hussain who later passed away in 2002. She has opened her dance academy named Kara Bhavan in which many skilled dancers are trained. A hospital is also on her name, ‘Asha Parekh Hospital’ in Santa Cruz, Mumbai due to her vast contributions. She is also involved in many social and charitable causes.
In the year 1952, she made her bollywood debut with the screen name of Baby Asha Parekh in the movie titled Aasmaan. Later once she was performing at a stage function when she was noticed by famed film director Bimal Roy. After that he decided to cast her in Baap Beti in 1954. But the movie did not get success. when she was at the age of sixteen, she decided to try acting again and make her debut as a heroine. But she was rejected by Vijay Bhatt in his movie ‘Goonj Uthi Shehnai‘ in 1959. But fortunately lm producer Subodh Mukherjee and writer-director Nasir Hussain cast her as the heroine in ‘Dil Deke Dekho‘ in same year. She was casted opposite famous actor, Shammi Kapoor and the movie was a blockbuster hit. She was shot to fame with this movie and became a huge star. Later she was casted by Nasser Hussain in six more movies : Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai (1961), Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon (1963), Teesri Manzil (1966), Baharon Ke Sapne (1967), Pyar Ka Mausam (1969) and Caravan (1971).
She was known as glamour girl/excellent dancer/tomboy in most of her films. Later director Raj Khosla gave her some different kind of roles such as serious roles in Do Badan (1966), Chirag (1969) and Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki (1978). In 1970, she played more dramatic roles in movies, ‘Pagla Kahin Ka’ and ‘Kati Patang‘ which also earned her Filmfare Best Actress Award. Apart from hindi cinema, she has also acted in three movies in her mother tongue and also acted in some Punjabi films and a Kannada film. In her later career, she started to play character roles such as sister-in-law and mother. After that she stopped acting and moved to become a television director. She formed a production company Akruti and produced serials like Palash ke Phool, Baaje Payal, Kora Kagaz and a comedy Dal Mein Kaala. She has received Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002.
