Songs of Ashok Kumar
Sanjay Ashok Kumar, born as Kumudlal Kunjilal Ganguly was one of the prominent bollywood actors in 1940s - 1960s. He was born on October 13th, 1911 at Bhagalpur, Bengal Presidency, British India. He was born to a Bengali family of Kunjalal Ganguly and Gouri Devi and also had two brothers named Kishore Kumar and Anoop Kumar. Kishore Kumar was his youngest brother who also attained an iconic prestige in the film industry alongwith Ashok Kumar. His father was a lawyer by profession. It was he broke from the theatrical style then common in Indian film towards a more naturalistic method. He was also called as Dadamoni in the industry which is an affectionate term for elder brother. It is very little known that he was also a fabulous painter. He had worked in the movie titled ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi‘ in 1958 in which he worked alongwith his own brothers. He also had a sister named Sati Devi who married with Sashadhar Mukherjee.
Talking to his film career, he started his earnings with Bombay Talkies in Bombay as laboratory assistant. His debut in the film line was with the movie ‘Jeevan Naiya‘ in 1936. He got that film when the lead actor of the movie named Najam-ul-Hussain suddenly falls ill and the company had to find a new hero. At that time, Himanshu Rai who was the director of the movie, called Ashok Kumar to do that role. Later he became one of the most famous hindi film actors. Later he starred in Izzat 1937, Savitri 1937 and Nirmala 1938. His performance was shaded under by Devika Rani who was more bigger star of that time. He made his own identity with the movie ‘Kangan’ in 1939, Bandhan in 1940 and Jhoola in 1941 alongwith actress Leela Chitnis. He also sang his own songs which was the tradition in that time.
He also played the role of villain in 1943 movie titled ‘Kismet‘ which was the first role of anti-hero in Indian film industry. This movie went on to create a record for the highest grossing film in India at the time of its release. Apart from his acting, he also became a producer and produced several movies for Bombay Talkies during the final years of the company including the famous Mahal in 1949. He starred with Madhubala in that movie. In 1950s, he played several roles of cigarette-smoking criminal or police officer. By the decade 1960, he started to play character roles such as parent, grandparent, dirty old man and suave criminal, being careful never to be typecast. Also he was paired up twenty times with the queen of tragedy named Meena Kumari in movies such as Parineeta, Bahu Begum, Pakeezah, Ek hi Raasta, Bandish, Aarti and many more.
