Songs of Bappi Lahiri
Bappi Lahiri is one of the most prominent Bollywood music directors and playback singers. He was born on November 27th, 1952 at Calcutta in West Bengal. He has sung some of his own compositions which became popular among the audience. He was born as Alokesh Lahiri to the family having a rich tradition in classical music, of Aparesh Lahiri, his father who was also a famous Bengali singer. His mother also was a musician and a singer who was well-versed in classical music and Shyama Sangeet. He is the only child of his parents. In his early age, his techings regarding music were given by his parents. Not only this, he also started to play tabla when he was just three years of age. He has singing and composing abilities from his childhood. He is married with Chitrani and has a daughter named Rema and a son named Bappa Lahiri who is a music director.
The trend of disco music in Indian Cinema was pioneered by him which later changes the way or style of music presentation in the movies. He started his career in 1972 when he got his first opportunity in a Bengali film. In next year, 1973 he composed music for ‘Nanha Shikari’ which goes average but he was noticed by everyone. He was shot to fame after two years in 1975 with the movie ‘Zakhmee‘ in which he composed the music as well as sang the song “Nothing Is Impossible” alongwith legendary playback singers Kishore Kumar and Mohammad Rafi. His next movie was ‘Chalte Chalte‘ in 1976 in which he sang “Jaana Kahan Hai” alongwith Sulakshana Pandit. The song became successful among the listeners. He once again showed his class in the movie ‘Surakshaa‘ with whome he became more popular. Later in 1980s, he became popular and was upto the stardom where he composed and sang for ‘Disco Dancer‘, ‘Namak Halaal‘ and ‘Sharaabi’.
The credit of disco music in Indian Cinema goes to him as he was the first person who brought this trend to the Bollywood. He extensively used playback singers such as Alisha Chinoy and Usha Uthup for his compositions. He got disappeared from the industry in early 1990s and again came back in 1993 with the movie ‘Dalaal‘ in which the song “Gutur Gutur” was superhit. After a long time he once again came in limelight when he lent his voice to the song ” Bambai Nagariya” of the movie ‘Taxi Number 9211‘ in 2006. Same year he once again lent his voice to the song “Ek Lo Ek Muft” from the superhit movie ‘Guru‘. He has appeared on a popular television show ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Little Champs’ on Zee TV where he became the judge alongwith Alka Yagnik and Abhijeet.
