Songs of Bombay Ka Babu
When Lover boy Dev Anand was paired with Suchitra Sen, beauty Queen of Bengal in “Bombay ka babu” in 1960, it became a sensational news. At that time, Dev Anand was the ruling king of romantic movies of bollywood. Suchitra Sen, was also an already accomplished film actress with her two hit movie “Devdas” and “Musafir”. Viewer were expecting a romantic chemistry between them. But because of unconventional ending of movie, where Dev Anand and Suchitra turned up as brother and sister, the movie resulted as a big flop at box office. The movie was directed by Raj Khosla, inspired by Hollywood movie “O. Henry”. He attempted the boldest movie of his life. The producer of movie was Jal Mistry. The music of the film was given by Sachin Dev Burman. The story of the movie was written by Rajinder Singh Bedi. The main stars of the film were Dev Anand , Suchitra Sen, Nazir Hussain and Jagdish Raj.
“Bombay Ka Babu” belongs to a guy named Babu ( Dev Anand ), who becomes a criminal by consequences. His childhood friend Shyam, who is police inspector in Mumbai understands him and does all he can to protect him. Once after coming out of prison he promised himself not to commit crime any more. In a raid by police force, Balli’s ( Jagdish ) is arrested by police. He gets bail and suspects that there is Babu’s hand in informing about him. This misunderstanding leads to an encounter between them and Balli dies on the spot. Frightened Babu immediately leaves Mumbai and moves to Shimla. There he strangely gets involved in a criminal racket. The boss of gang sends him to a house where he has to take place of the lost son of the owner who ran away from home two decades earlier. As he goes there he received great affection by the parents ( Nazir hussain and Achla Sachdev ). However, his young sister Maya ( Suchitra Sen ) has some doubt in her mind about him but never got a chance to express it. As time went on, Babu silently falls in love with the beautiful Maya but he never expressed it to her.
One night as planned by his boss, he was on way his to rob entire wealth and hand over to his boss, he discover that it is actually the residence of Balli, whom he killed accidently. A drastic change in his mind forces him to disobey his boss’s command. At last Balli’s family accept him after knowing the truth. Movie ends with hero heroine turning up as brother and sister. Suchitra and Dev Anand formed a superb combination and both gave mature and sensitive performances. Jagdish Raj gave the most memorable performance of his life. Movie has a good story and melodious music given by S D Verman yet movie proved out to be a big flop at the box office. May be Indian audience failed to digest the unexpected ending of the story.
