Ace movie director, Manmohan Desai was barely 24 when he made his directorial debut with movie named Chhalia, produced by his younger brother Subhash Desai. The movie is based on a mix of real life incident and influenced by Hollywood movie: “White Nights”. The story of the film is written by Raj Anand ( father of actor-director Tinnu Anand, and grandfather of Siddharth Raj Anand of “Bachna Ae Haseeno” fame ). The music is given by Kalyanji-Anandji while Laxmikant-Pyarelal were the assistant music director, who played a vital role in making this emotional drama a big hit at the box office. The singer includes Mukesh, Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi. The movie centres around a married woman Shanti ( Nutan ) and the rivalry between Hindi and Pathan people at the partition time. The main stars of the movie are Nutan, Raj Kapoor, Pran, Shobana Samarth and Rehman.

Main character of the movie is Shanti ( Nutan ) who gets married to Kewal ( Rehman ) just one day before partition. Two families shifted to Delhi from Lahore but unfortunately Shanti ( Nutan ) is left behind, and is forced to share a roof with Adul Rehman ( Pran ), who has a sister of Shanti’s age in India. After five year she somehow manage to return India with her son. She is first welcomed by her husband with open arms but soon he refused to accept her when the child identify himself as Anwar, and his father as Abdul Rehman ( Pran ). Even Shanti’s parents refuses to give her shelter, though during that five year, she lived with Abdul Rehman but she never saw his face. Physically and emotionally shattered, Shanti tries to commit suicide after leaving his son in remand house, but she is saved by an outlaw, Chhalia ( Raj Kapoor ), who as time progress get attracted towards Shanti. Rehman lands in Delhi to settle old scores with Chhalia.

One or two fight between them ended with friendship. Climax of movie was shot at Dusshera festival, when Rehman and Chhalia uncovered the truth to Shanti’s husbad Kewal. Nutan lived the role of an emotionally torn woman caught between the necessities and compulsions of man’ world. Pran played the pathan role in is his usual style. Raj Kapoor as usual played with his facial expression to gather audience.
