Devika Rani was one of the first Hindi Cinema actress who became popular in the decade of 1930s and 1940s. She was one of the prominent actress of that time who has set the trend of acting in the Hindi Cinema. She was born on March 30th, 1908 at Waltair which is now in Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. She was born as Devika Rani Chaudhary Roerich who was later became popular by the name of Devika Rani. She was born to the family of Col. M.N. Chaudhuri and Leela while her father was the first Indian Surgeon-General of Madras. She was the great grand-niece of the Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. She completed her schooling in early 1920s and later studied drama at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and the Royal Academy of Music in London, UK, where she won scholarships. She also studied architecture, textile and decor design, and apprenticed under Elizabeth Arden.

Devika Rani was married to Himanshu Rai who was the producer and actor in 1929. She started her film career in the year 1933 when she first faced the camera in the movie ‘Karma’. She appeared alonwith her husband in the movie. She became famous and also fell in the controversy when she gave a long kissing scene in the movie to her husband. Later they founded the Bombay Talkies film studio in which later famous actors also worked with such as Ashok Kumar, Madhubala etc. Three years later, in 1936 she once again appeared in the movie titled ‘Achhut Kanya’ in which she appeared alongwith newcomer, Ashok Kumar. The movie was a big hit of that era which made both of them superstar over the night. The story of that movie was based on an untouchable girl and a Brahmin boy.

The song of that movie “Main Ban Ki Chidiya” in the movie which was picturised on her became the superhit song of that time. By the time she had reached to the top of the fame when she suddenly got a shock when her husband died in 1940. After that she fought for control of her husband’s studio Bombay Talkies and had to share control with Sashadhar Mukherjee. In 1943, several veterans left Bombay Talkies and formed their new Studio named ‘Filmistan’. Later she married again in 1945 with a Russian painter named Svetoslav Roerich. Then she left acting and joined her husband in Bangalore. She has got Padma Shri from the President of India in 1958. Also in 1970, she was the first recipient of the prestigious film prize, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. She died on March 9th, 1994 at her sprawling estate ‘Tataguni’ in Bangalore.
