Songs of Dilip Kumar


The greatest and most iconic Indian film actor Yusuf Khan who is popularly known as Dilip Kumar is a veteran Hindi Cinema actor. He is also known as ‘Tragedy King’ of the bollywood who was born on December 11, 1922 at Peshawar, N.W.F.P, Pakistan. He was born in a twelve children family and his father Ghulam Sarwar was a fruit merchant and owned large orchards in Peshawar and Deolali in Maharashtra near Nashik. Apart from his acting he is holding the record of most number of Filmfare Awards won for that category. He also recieved Lifetime Achievment Award in the year 1992. He married Saira Banu who was another superhit Hindi Cinema actress. He has been active in bollywood for more than five decades and gave several hit movies. He has a unique style of acting which makes him apart from other actors.

He started with the movie Jwar Bhata in 1944 which went flop and he was unnoticed. He waited for sometime and made a strong comeback with the film Jugnu which was his first major hit. Also he has worked with legendary actor Raj Kapoor in the movie Andaz in 1949 which was a romantic melodrama. The movie made him a star overnight. He became known for playing tragic roles in popular films such as Deedar (1951), Amar (1954), Devdas (1955) and Madhumati (1958) which earned him the title of ‘tragedy king’. He starred in the historical film Mughal-e-Azam which is the second highest grossing film in Hindi film history. No one can forget his character of the Mughal crown-prince Jehangir, the son of Akbar who loved Anarkali but was unable to save her. Later he turned producer when he produced the hit Ganga Jamuna in which he and his real-life brother Nasir Khan played the title roles.

After a brief period of box office flops in the mid 1960s, he bounced back when he played a dual role of twins separated at birth in the film Ram Aur Shyam (1967) which was one of the biggest box office hits of the year. Later in 1970s his shining became fade as the new actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna had begun to take the spotlight. Then he went on a big break and returned with the blockbuster movie Kranti in 1981 which was the biggest hit of the year. In 1986 he once again showed his talent in the film Karma in which he played as Dada Thakur. His last hit was Saudagar in 1991 in which he appeared with Raaj Kumar. The Government of India has honored him with the Dada Saheb Phalke award in 1994. This underlines his vast contribution to Indian Cinema. Dilip Kumar was also awarded the Nishan-e-Pakistan which is Pakistan’s highest civilian award.
