Songs of Gol Maal
Gol Maal starring Amol Palekar, Utpal Dutt, Bindiya Goswami, David, Deven Verma and Dina Pathak was a Bollywood comedy movie released in 1979. The Movie was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. The film was produced by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and N.C.Sippy in collaboration. The story of movie was written by Sachin Bhowmick and lyrics were written by Gulzar. The music for the film was given by Rahul Dev Burman. This movie bagged many film fare awards like best Actor Award to Amol Palekar, Best Comedian Award to Utpal Dutt and best Lyricist Award to Gulzar. The movie was also nominated for other awards as well. The movie is centered around a fun loving guy Ramprasad Dashrathprasad Sharma. This character is played by Amol Palekar.
Ramprasad ( Amol Palekar ) has just passed charted accounted exam and looking out for a job. His uncle informs him about the vacancy in his friend Bhavani Shankar’s( Utpal Dutt ) firm. But he also enquire him that he would not able to refer him because Bhavani Shankar is a very strict person and hate recommendations for job. Bhavani has a fascination for Indian values, displays a embarrassments for the youth who give less important to professionalism and more to sports. He give great value to the cultural arts and considers a moustache as a sign of pride of a man. He believes that a man’s moustache represents his moral value and pride. Mr Shankar is ready to pay a few hundred rupees extra, as salary to any employee, as long as he fits his values. Ramprasad’s uncle advised him, he can get that job only if he exaggerate his Indian values by wearing a short kurta pajama instead of his usual flashy shirts, using his full name without abbreviations, showing less value to music and sports and more dedication towards professionalism. Ramprasad did as his uncle advise him and he get the job. One day he takes leave by telling lie that his mother (who died many years ago) is ill and goes to watch a hockey match. Unfortunately, Bhavani Shankar, who also arrive there to watch the match, sees him there. Main drama of the movie starts from here. The very next day Bhavani summons Ramprasad to his office and asks him about the hockey match. Ramprasad in oder to save his job, once again lies and convinces Bhavani Shankar that he might had seen his “moustache-less” identical twin brother named Lucky (alias Lakshmanprasad Dashrathprasad Sharma) at the stadium.
Ramprasad played emotional trick over Bhavani Shankar and offers his resignation letter since he has lost the confidence of his boss. Bhavani Shankar feels guilty about accusing him and decides
to hire his brother Lucky to teach music to his daughter Urmila ( Bindiya Goswami ). Ramprasad in order to hide his truth, shaves his mustache to become Lucky and starts to mentor Urmila. Ramprasad cleverly manage to play double role, lucky and himself (Ramprasand) with help of his friend Deven Verma (playing himself) who suggested idea of fake moustache and spirit
gum. Ramprasad also arranges for a mother time to time to hide his truth. Urmilla fall in
love with lucky and hatred toward Ramprasad. Movie provides many laughs and finally drama ends with marriage of Ramprasad and Urmila.
