Songs of Guru Dutt
One of the most famous and legendary Hindi Cinema actor named Guru Dutt was born on July 9th, 1925 at Bangalore, Mysore, British India. Guru Dutt was his screen name though his real name was Vasanth Kumar Shivashankar Padukone. He was born to the family of Shivashankar Rao Padukone and Vasanthi Padukone. His parents were Chitrapur Saraswats, originally settled at Panambur. His father was a headmaster who later became a bank employee and also his mother was a housewife who later taught in a school, gave private tuition and also wrote short stories and translated Bengali novels into Kannada. He had seen the financial difficulties in his family from his childhood and also had a strained relationship between his parents. Also he had lost his younger brother, Shashidhar who was seven months old. He has completed his schooling from Bengal and therefore was able to speak fluent Bengali.
He married with Geeta Roy and had three children named Tarun, Arun and Nina. His wife was also a very famous playback singer. Guru Dutt was not only an actor, rather he was a great director and producer. Very few people know that he was also a choreographer. He entered in the acting field in the year 1944 where he was appeared in a small role as Sri Krishna in the movie ‘Chand’. Next year, in 1945 he starred in ‘Lakhrani’ and also assisted the director ‘Vishram Bedekar’ for this movie. He moved to Bombay in 1947 where he worked with two leading directors of the time, with Amiya Chakravarty in Girl’s School, and with Gyan Mukherjee in the Bombay Talkies film Sangram. He became famous as an actor in the year 1953 when he starred in superhit movie ‘Baazi‘. Later he played in several hit movies such as Aar Paar (1954), Mr. & Mrs. ‘55 (1955), Pyaasa (1957), Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960) and many more.
The movie ‘Aar Paar’ in 1954 was a hit which lead to the series of hit films of him. ‘Pyaasa’ was his biggest hit movie in which he played as a poet who was rejected by an uncaring world but achieves success only after his apparent death. In the year 1959, he starred in ‘Kaagaz Ke Phool’ but the movie was failed at the box office miserably. He was so disappointment as he had invested a great deal of love, money and energy in this film. The movie was about a self-absorbed tale of a famous director who falls in love with an actress. His last hit was ‘Chaudhvin Ka Chand’ which was released in 1960. Also he has directed and produced some movies such as Jaal (1952), Baaz (1953), Sailaab (1956), Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962), Gauri (1957) which was incomplete, Baharein Phir Bhi Aayengi (1966) which was released after his death etc. He died on October 10th, 1964.
