Songs of Helen


A very famous and prominent actress and dancer in the Bollywood industry, Helen was born on October 21st, 1939 in Burma. Her full name is Helen Jairag Richardson Khan but is popular by the name of Helen. She was born to an Indian family in Burma and has two siblings, a brother named Roger and a sister named Jennifer. Her faher died during the Second World War and then the family migrated to India in Mumbai in 1943. Her mother started doing work as a nurse but her salary was not enough for their livelihood. As a result, Helen had to quit schooling in support of her famly. Helen is married with Salim Khan in 1980 and become his second wife. Also the couple adopted a girl named Arpita and famous actor, Salman Khan is her step son. Also she has starred alongside Salman Khan in ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’, ‘Marigold’ etc.

Helen had started her acting career in the year 1951 with the superhit movie ‘Awaara‘. She played as a chorus dancer in the film. She got her break when a family friend who was also an actress known as Cukoo, helped her find jobs as a chorus dancer in the starting days. She was noted for her performance and in the next year 1952, she got a chance to play as a solo dancer in the film titled ‘Alif Laila‘. Later she was soon working regularly as a solo dancer in several movies such as ‘Hoor-e-Arab’ in 1953 and in ‘Baarish’. The very popular song “Mr. John O Baba Khan” from the movie ‘Baarish’ was an instant hit which gave her new heights. Later in 1958, she starred in another hit movie ‘Howrah Bridge‘ in which she performed an item number “Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu”. The song was also proved to be a hit which increased her status in the industry.

Also the Bollywood playback singer Asha Bhosle frequently sang for Helen. In th year 1965 she starred in another superhit movie ‘Gumnaam‘ in which she starred opposite comedian actor, Mehmood alongside Nanda and Manoj Kumar in lead roles. Also the movie earned her nomination for the best supporting actress. Not only this she has played some dramatic roles such as rape victim in Shakti Samanta’s ‘Pagla Kahin Ka‘ in the year 1970. Also she has starred in several movies such as Caravan (1971), Hulchul (1971), Upasana (1971), Dil Daulat Duniya (1972), Anamika (1973), Geeta Mera Naam (1974), Sholay (1975), Bairaag (1976), Amar Akbar Anthony (1977) etc. Her another very popular song “Mehbooba Mehbooba” from Sholay is still remember for her performance. Later she got offscrenn for several years and then re-appeared in the year 1996 with the movie ‘Khamoshi: The Musical’.
