Songs of Hemanta Kumar


A very prominent and famous Hindi Cinema playback singer, composer and producer named Hemanta Kumar was born on June 16th, 1920 at Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. He is also very common by the name of Hemanta Mukherjee in the industry. H was born to the family which hailed from a village named Baharu in West Bengal. Later his family moved to Clacutta in early 20th century. There he attended Mitra Institution school in Bhawanipore area. It was there where he first met with his friend Subhas Mukhopadhyay who became his longtime friend. He entered in Jadavpur University to study Engineering after completing his matriculation but later quit academics to pursue a career in music. By 1930, he entirely committed to music. He married Bela Mukherjee in 1945 and the couple has a son named Jayant who is married to actress Maushmi Chatterjee and a daughter named Ranu.

Hemanta started his career in the year 1933 when he first sang the song “Amar Ganete Ele Nabarupi Chirantanii” for All India Radio. His music career was mentored by the Bengali musician, Sailesh Duttagupta. He has also received training in classical music from Ustad Faiyaz Khan. During the decade of 1950s, he has made his image as a versatile singer and composer. In 1954, he has composed the music of the movie ‘Nagin‘. His first movie song was in the Bengali film titled ‘Nimai Sanyas’ which was released in 1941. The music was at the top for two years which helped him to get filmfare award for best music director in 1955. His career as a playback singer started for the actor Dev Anand for whome he has rendered his voice several times. His songs in movies like Jaal, House No. 44 and Solva Saal became quite popular.

Later in 1951 he moved to Bombay where he joined Filmistan Studios and composed music for the movie Anandmath (1952) which gained high popularity. He produced many movies under Geetanjali Productions. Movies like Bees Saal Baad, Kohraa, Biwi Aur Makaan, Faraar, Rahgir and Khamoshi from which except Bees Saal Baad and Khamoshi were not very successful. In 1970s, he became one of the famous playback singers as well as composers in the industry. But during the year 1980, he suffered a major cardiac attack which severely affected his vocal capabilities. He died on September 26th, 1989 in Calcutta.
