Songs of Jagjit Singh


A very famous and prominent Bollywood playback singer as well as a ghazal singer, Jagjit Singh was born on February 8th, 1941 at Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan. His mother tongue is Punjabi and he has given his voice in the same language as well as he has a strong hold on different languages like Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Gujarati and Nepali. He was born as Jeet, to the family of Amar Singh Dhiman, a government employee and Bachchan Kaur. He has four sisters and two brothers and all were raised as a sikh. He attended Khalsa High School in Sri Ganganagar and then Government College to complete his matriculation in science stream. Later he went onto DAV College, Jalandhar to graduate in arts. He is a post-graduate in history from Kurukshetra University. He learnt music under Pandit Chaganlal Sharma for two years and later learnt Khayal, Thumri and Dhrupad forms of Indian Classical Music from Ustad Jamaal Khan. He is married to Chitra Singh in 1969 and had a son named Vivek.

Jagjit is associated with music from his childhood. In his early career, he was encouraged by Late Professor Suraj Bhan who was the Vice-Chancellor of Punjab University and Kurukshetra University. Later in 1965, he moved to Bombay in search of better opportunities. There he struggle a bit and then got singing advertisement jingles or performing at weddings and parties. By the time in 1970s, the art of ghazal was dominated by some very reputed singers like Noor Jehan, Malika Pukhraj, Begum Akhtar, Talat Mahmood and Mehdi Hassan. Though Jagjit Singh was able to make his own mark in the industry. He released his private album ‘The Unforgettables’ in 1976 which set new sales records. In the decade of 1980s, he sang in various bollywood movies such as Arth (1982), Saath Saath (1982) and Premgeet (1981).

In the movie Arth, he sang the songs “Koi Yeh Kaise Bataye”, “Tu Nahin” and “Tum Itna Jo Muskura Rahe Ho” became superhit which raised him to fame. Apart from his playback singing, he is also a composer and composed the music in the movie ‘Premgeet‘ (1981). Later in 1982, he once again rendered his voice in the movie Saath Saath where he sang the songs “Pyar Mujhse Jo Kiya Tumne”, “Tum Ko Dekha Tho” and also a duet with his wife, “Yeh Tera Ghar Yeh Mera Ghar” which became superhit. After a long time, he again rendered his voice to the song “Chithi Na Koi Sandesh” from the movie Dushman in 1998. But he became famous for his song “Hosh Walon Ko Khabar Kya” in the superhit movie ‘Sarfarosh‘ in 1999. Two years later in 2001, he sang the song “Koi Fariyad” in the movie ‘Tum Bin‘ and also given his voice to the song “Kiska Chehra Ab Main Dekhoon” from the movie ‘Tarkieb’.
