Songs of Johnny Walker
One of the most famous and talented actors cum comedians in Hindi Cinema was Johnny Walker. He was born as Badruddin Jamaluddin Kazi on May 15th, 1923 at Srinagar and Johnny Walker was his screen name. He was born to the family of a textile mill worker who later moved to Bombay after closing of the mill. His family consists of fifteen members and it was too hard to feed them. Therefore five children of the family died at a young age. By the time, Johnny was employed in the job of a conductor in Bombay Electric Supply and Transport (B.E.S.T) buses. He married Noorjehan with whome he met in 1955 on the sets of Guru Dutt’s film Mr. and Mrs. 55. The couple has six children in which three are daughters named Kausar, Tasneem and Firdaus and three sons named Nazim, Kazim and Nasir. Johnny Walker was a humble man who kept a low profile even at the peak of his career.
It was his hobby to entertain the people and when he was a B.E.S.T. bus conductor, he used to entertain the passangers in his bus by some antics. In 1950, once he was busy in entertaining people and there he was noticed by very famous Bollywood actor and script-writer named Balraj Sahni who was also travelling in his bus. He was writing the script of the movie ‘Baazi‘ at that time and later introduced him to Guru Dutt. The role of a comedian was vacant in his movie and Johnny got the role. He had first gone through a screen test and played the role of a drunk which he performed so well that Guru Dutt named him Johnny Walker. In 1957, he was casted in the lead role in the movie ‘Johnny Walker’ which was named after him. Later he bacame a close friend of Guru Dutt. Scripts were often changed to make some room for Johnny.
He starred as a comedian in several superhit movies such as Taxi Driver (1952), Aar Paar (1954), Mr. & Mrs. 55 (1955), C.I.D. (1956), Pyaasa (1957), Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), Mughal-E-Azam (1960), Mere Mehboob (1963) and many more. But sudden death of Guru Dutt in 1964 deeply impacted him. After that he had a few small roles in movies in 1970s through the ’90s. During that period, he acted in Anand (1970), Pratigya (1975), Shaan (1980) and Chachi 420 (1998). In the movie ‘Anand‘ he played the role of a serious person though his appearance was for a short time in the movie. He last acted in comedy movie ‘Chachi 420‘. He was requested for that role in the movie by famous Gulzar. He died on July 29th, 2003 at the age of eighty in Mumbai.
