Songs of Kanan Devi


A famous actress as well as playback singer of early Indian cinema named Kanan Devi was born around 1916 at Howrah in West Bengal. Later she observed that she was born illegitimately and later was adopted by another family. She was adopted by a poor family and her adopted father later died. Thereafter she alongwith her mother had to do all sorts of work to drag on their lives. Her birth name was Kanan Dassi but she changed her name to Kanan Devi. She is credited as the first star of Bengali Cinema. She was married to Shri Ashok Maitra but the couple got divorced later and she re-married with Haridas Bhattacharya. Her ability of acting and singing made her famous in the industry. She had a unique style of singing, usually in rapid tempo.

Kanan Devi was first faced camera in her life when she was just ten years of age. In 1926, she was introduced to Jyoti Studios by a well wisher, where she was cast in a small role in the movie titled ‘Joydev‘. Later she worked with Radha Films. She became famous in the 1934 movies, titled ‘Khooni Kaun’ and ‘Maa’ where she gave her superb performance. Later she entered New Theatres, Calcutta where she met with maestro Raichand Boral. He helped her in improving of her Hindi accent. This helped her in singing also and later she received her initial musical training under Ustad Alla Rakha. Shortly she got an employment at the Megaphone Gramaphone Company as a singer due to her melodious voice. Later she further went under training with Bhishmadev Chatterjee. At that time in her career, she changed her name to Kanan Devi for the purpose of films.

In 1935, she got an offer from famous director, P.C. Barua to act in the movie ‘Devdas’, which she refused due to some personal problems. Two years later in 1937, she played the lead role in ‘Mukti’. Her performance in the movie is rated as her finest performance of all times. Her on screen chemistry with another top actor of that time named K. C. Dey that people enjoyed the most. Later in 1941, she resigned from the contract with New Theatres and started to work as a freelancer. Later she starred in some hit movies such as Hospital (1943), Banphool (1945), and Rajlakshmi (1946). After that she moved to Bombay in 1948 where she first acted in Hindi movie ‘Chandrashekhar‘ with Ashok Kumar. She is the first lady of the Bengali screen who was awarded the ‘Dadasaheb Phalke Award‘ for her contribution to Indian cinema in 1976. She died on July 17th, 1992 in Calcutta.
