Songs of Lata Mangeshkar
India’s most melodious singer, Lata Mangeshkar was born in Indore, Madhya Pardesh on 28 September 1929. She started her career at the age of 21. Her father Deenanath Mangeshkar was a theater actor and a classical singer. Her mother Shudhhamati was the second wife of her father. She has three sisters and one brother. She is the elder one in his family. Her sister Asha Bhonsle is also a famous bollywood playback singer. She had rendered her voice in more than 980 bollywood movies. She had sung songs in more than twenty regional language. She also recieved the Bharat Ratna awards. She is the only second Indian who recieved this award. She was featured in the Guinness Book of World Record for recording more than 30,000 songs including solo, duet and chorus in more than twenty regional language from 1948 to 1991. Her father changes their last name from Hardikar to Mangeshkar to make the identity of their native town.
Lata took her first lesson of singing from her father. She also started acting in her father’s plays at the age of five. Her idol and favourite singer was K. L. Saigal. At the starting of her school life she start teaching singing songs to other students. When her teacher stopped her, she gets angry and immediately left her school. She lost her father at the age of 13. Her father and family friend Master Vinayak then helped her family and supported Lata. He gave lata a chance of singing. She sung the song Naachu Yaa Gade, it was composed by Sadashivrao from the movie Kiti Hasaal. It was released in the year 1942, but the song was dropped in the final cut of the movie. Her first hindi song was Mata Ek Sapoot from the marathi movie Gajaabhaau. It was released in the year 1943. Then in 1945 she came to mumbai. Then she started taking lesson in Hindustani Classical Music from Ustad Amanat Ali Khan. He rendered her voice for movie Aap ki seva mein in 1946. After the death of Master Vinayak’s in 1948, music director Ghulam Haider helped her. Haider introduced Lata with the producer Sashadhar Mukhrjee. But Sashadhar dismissed her. Then due to angryness haider annoyed that in the upcomimg year they would fall at Lata’s feet and beg her for singing in their movies.
Lata practised a lot and created her own style of singing. At that time hindi songs were filled with urdu letters. Due to her South Indian accent Dilip Kumar made a mildy comment on her. Then she started tooking Urdu lessons form Shafi. In 1949 she had rendered her voice for movie Mahal, Aayega Aanewala. The song was superhit and proved her as a good singer. Then after her career reached at the peak. She rendered her voice for various bollywood movies and now also she is at her peak. She had won various awards in her singing career. In 1969 she won Padma bhushan, 1999 she won Padma Vibhushan, NTR National Award, three National Film awards, Bharat Ratna Award, Dada Saheb Phalke award and many more. Though her entry in Guinness were not updated since 1991. According to the source till now she had rendered her voice in more than 50,000 songs.
