Songs of Madhubala


A very popular, charming and prominent Hindi Cinema actress named Madhubala was born on February 14th, 1933 at New Delhi. She was one of the most famous actresses of 1950s and 1960s. Her real name was Mumtaz Begum Jehan Dehlavi whereas Madhubala was her screen name. She was born to a muslim conservative from Tanoli tribe, Pashtun (Afghan) family of Ataullah Khan who was working for Imperial Tobacco Company. She was the fifth child of eleven children family from which four of her sisters and two of her brothers died. Later her father also lost his job and then her father relocated them to Mumbai. There they all struggle a lot to get some work. Madhubala was linked with actor Dilip Kumar. Later she married Kishore Kumar.

Madhubala entered in film industry as Mumtaz at the age of nine when she first acted in the movie Basant in 1942. The movie was a box office success in which she played as the daughter of the popular actress, Mumtaz Shanti. Later on she went to act in several films as a child artist. The very famous actress of that time named Devika Rani got impressed with her ability and advised her to change her name to Madhubala. She got her first major break through lead role in 1947 movie titled ‘Neel Kamal‘ in which she was cast opposite Raj Kapoor. The movie was average rating but she was noticed for her performance. She got to work in 1949 movie ‘Mahal‘ which was a Bombay Talkies production after which she became a fully fledged star. The song “Aayega Aanewala” from the movie was also became a hit which was featured on her and Ashok Kumar.

She had the burden of securing herself and her family’s position financially and as a result she acted in as many as twenty-four films in the first four years of her adult career. She was always considered more beautiful than her acting abilities. In 1954, the movie ‘Biraj Bahu’ came in which she showed her class. Her co-stars at the time were the most poular of the period: Ashok Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Rehman, Pradeep Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Sunil Dutt and Dev Anand. Some of her superhit movies are : Amar, Mr. & Mrs. 55, Mahal , Mughal-E-Azam, Howrah Bridge, Barsaat Ki Raat etc. She will always be remembered for her performance in blockbuster movie ‘Mughal-E-azam’ opposite Dilip Kumar. She died on February 23rd, 1969 due to her illness.
