Songs of Mahalaksmi Iyer
Best known for her Hindi and Tamil songs, a very prominent bollywood playback singer is Mahalaksmi Iyer. She was born to the family of Vijayalakshmi who is her mother and also a Carnatic classical singer. Her family has a musical background in which she has grown up and therefore she is born talented. She was born youngest in four children family, having three elder sisters named Arpana, Padmini and Shobha. She grew up in Mumbai and also studies there. She became graduate from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. She also joined classes in Urdu language to perfect her all-essential pronunciation and hide any traces of a Southern accent. Although she had started to learn Hindustani music at a very early age. She has sung more than one thousand songs in various Indian languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Assamese, Kannada and Malayalam.
Having so much of talent, Mahalakshmi got her first break in the bollywood industry in the year 1998 with the movie ‘Dil Se‘ in which she sang “Aye Ajnabi” which became popular. She made her debut with another famous playback singer named A R Rahman. Later she sang for Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy in the movie ‘Dus’. This movie was Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s debut movie as music directors and Mahalakshmi went on to work frequently with them. Also she has sung in serials, jingles and original albums. Her voice was critically acclaimed after her song “So Ja Chanda” from the film ‘ Mission Kashmir‘ in the year 2000. Later on she sang in some hit movies such as Yaadein and Saathiya and made her unique identity in the industry. She has worked with some of the biggest music composers like A R Rahman, Anu Malik, Jatin-Lalit and more. Her career took a turn after the song “Chalka Chalka Re” from hit movie ‘Saathiya‘ which became famous nationwide.
Later she also moved to Yash Raj Productions where she got to sing in some of the superhit movies such as Dhoom 2, Bunty Aur Babli, Salaam Namaste, Fanaa, Ta Ra Rum Pum and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. Also in 2002, the song “Kabhi Sham Dhale” from ‘Sur: The Melody of Life‘ became hit. She gave extra ordinary performance and will be remembered for songs like “Chhup Chhup Ke” from Bunty Aur Babli in 2005 which became popular in the country. Some of her superhit songs for which she is appraised are “Har Taraf” from Rishtey, “Aaj Ki Raat” from Don and “Bol Na Halke Halke” from Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. The most recent film ‘Slumdog Millionaire‘ which was released in 2008, she sang the Urdu words between the short “Jai Ho” chants as well as portions of the verses.
