Songs of Mahendra Kapoor
One of the most prominent and famous playback singer in the industry of hindi cinema was Mahendra Kapoor who was born on January 9th, 1934 at Amritsar, Punjab. He moved to Bombay at a very young age. He has a son named Rohan Kapoor and three daughters. His son Rohan has also acted in few films in the 1980s such as Yash Chopra’s Faasle (1985) and Love 86 (1986). Mahendra Kapoor is famous for his patriotic songs which he has sung in Manoj Kumar’s film Upkaar. The song “Mere Desh Ki Dharthi” earned him the nationwide respect as well as fame. In his early life, he was inspired by legendary singer Mohammad Rafi but later he started learning classical music under many well known classical singers like Pt.Hussanlal, Pt. Jagannath Bua, Ustad Niaz Ahmed Khan, Ustad Abdul Rehman Khan and Pt.Tulsidaas Sharma. He has a unique voice which stood him out of the lane.
He entered in the feild of playback singing in the year 1958 with the movie ‘Navrang‘ where he sang “Aadha Hai Chandrama Raat Aadhi”. He sang that song under the musical direction of C. Ramchandra. He sang over twenty five thousand songs in various regional languages in the career of five decades. Some of his common songs are “Chalo ek baar phir se ajnabi ban jayen hum dono” in Gumrah, “Neele gagan ke tale” in Hamraaz. By the time he has improved his quality of singing and as a result his songs in the movie Dhool Ka Phool, Gumrah, Waqt, Hamraaz, Dhund etc shot him to the fame. His tuning with actor Manoj Kumar was also perfect as he sang some of his songs in the movies Upkaar (1967) and Purab Aur Paschim (1970). He sang “Iktara Bole” in the movie Yaadgar in 1970 for which he also get appreciated. He had received Filmfare award for the Best Male Playback Singer in 1963, 1967 and 1974.
Apart from hindi songs, he has also recorded the music in English. He sang “Oh Saly please Help me” and “I am Feeling Blue” and both of his songs were an amazing feat for an Indian singer to do. He also became the first Indian playback singer to record music in English. Although he has given his voice to the title track of one of the most famous TV serial ‘Mahabharata‘. Mahendra Kapoor is also very well known in Marathi movies as a playback singer. Some of his Marathi songs are “Ti Yete Aneeka Jate”, “He Chincheche zad dise maj chinar vrukshapari” and “Ratris khel chale ya gudh chandanyacha” which became a hit. Mahendra Kapoor was trained in singing by legendry Mohammed Rafi who helped him in winning the All-India singing competition and as a result he became one of the famous playback singers in the industry. He died of a cardiac failure on September 27th, 2008.
