Songs of Mala Sinha

Actress with Nepalese ethnicity, named Mala Sinha was born on November 11th, 1936 at Kashmir in northern part of India. She is a famous bollywood actress who was very popular in decades of 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s. She was actually born as Alda Sinha to the Nepalese Christian family of Albert Sinha, her father. Later she changed her name from Alda to Mala after her friends at school used to tease her calling ‘Dalda’ which is a brand name of vegetable oil of India. Talking to her personal life, she is married to C.P.Lohani who has retired now and has a daughter by the name of Pratibha Sinha who is also a bollywood actress. Apart from bollywood, she has done several movies in Bengali language as well as one film in Nepali language titled ‘Maitighar’ in 1996. She has starred in several blockbuster movies during her time which leads her to the peak in the industry.

She has played in several plays during her school time. She began her acting career as child artist in Bengali Films titled Jai Vaishno Devi followed by Shri Krishan Leela, Jog Biyog and Dhooli. She was first noted by Bengali film director Ardhendu Bose who saw her acting in a school play and later asked her father to cast her as a heroine in his film Roshanara in 1952. Later she moved to Bombay where she met with famous playback singer, ‘Geeta Dutt‘. Geeta liked her and introduced her to film director Kidar Sharma who later cast her in his next movie ‘Rangeen Ratein’ as a lead heroine. But before, she had appeared in ‘Badshah’ opposite Pradeep Kumar which went unnoticed. It is very little known that she was also a singer of some repute and used to sing for All India Radio. In 1957, Guru Dutt gave her a chance and cast her in his film ‘Pyaasa’. The role which she played was originally intended for Madhubala but she made justice with that role.

The movie ‘Pyaasa‘ was her turning point in the industry as she gave hits after hits in movies like ‘Parvarish‘, ‘Phir Subah Hogi’, ‘Main Nahse Main Hoon’, ‘Love Marriage’, ‘Dhool Ka Phool’, ‘Bahurani’, ‘Anpadh‘, ‘Aasra’, ‘Dil Tera Deewana‘, ‘Gumrah’, ‘Aankhen‘, ‘Hariyali Aur Rasta’, ‘Himalaya Ki God Mein’ and many more. One thing which was very rare common in her movies of 1960s that her movies were fuelled by her own star power as much as the heros. She never mind working with newcomers because she only believed in the story not the starcast. She has set the example by working with newcomers of her time like Dharmendra, Sunil Dutt, Sanjay Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. Also she has received several Filmfare nominations for Best Actress in movies like Dhool Ka Phool (1959), Bahu Rani (1963), Jahan Ara (1964) and Himalaya Ki God Mein (1964) and was honoured with the Star Screen Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006.
