Songs of Manna Dey
One of the famous playback singers in the world of cinema is Manna Dey. He was born on May 1st, 1919 at Kolkata, West Bengal. Actually Manna Dey is his nickname whereas his real name is Prabodh Chandra Dey. He was born to the family of Purna Chandra and Mahamaya Dey and got highly inspired by his youngest paternal uncle Sangeetacharya named K. C. Dey. His early schooling was done in a small pre-primary school named Indu Babur Pathshala and later attended Scottish Church Collegiate School and Scottish Church College. This was followed by Vidyasagar College from where he received his graduate education. He was excellent in wrestling and boxing from his childhood. His vocal talent became apparent at Scottish Church College where he sing aloud to entertain his classmates. Later his that talent was recognised by his uncle who started giving him singing lessons alongwith Ustad Dabir Khan.
During that time he obtained first position in three different categories of inter-collegiate singing competitions for three consecutive years. In 1942, Manna Dey visited Bombay and later accompanied his uncle, Krishna Chandra Dey. He started working as an assistant under him and then under legendary Sachin Dev Burman. He started working independently after assisting other music composers. He worked as a music director for various hindi movies as well as continued to take musical lessons in Hindustani classical music from Ustad Aman Ali Khan and Ustad Abdul Rahman Khan. The year 1943 brought his debut in the bollywood where he started his career in playback singing in ‘Tamanna’. The music of the movie was composed by his uncle and he sang a duet with Suraiya. That song became a superhit. Later in 1950, he sang a solo, “Upar Gagan Vishal” in ‘Mashal’. The music was composed by Sachin Dev Burman.
Apart from hindi cinema, he has also sang for Bengali and Marathi cinema. By the year 1952, he became a leading playback singer. He has also sang with classicist Bhimsen Joshi the song “Ketaki Gulab Juhi”. Also with Kishore Kumar he sang the very famous song “Yeh Dosti Hum Nehi Torenge” in Sholay (1975) and “Ek Chatur Naar” in Padosan. He has recorded more than 3500 songs. On December 18th, 1953 he married Sulochana Kumaran and have two daughters named Shuroma who was born on October 19th, 1956 and Sumita who was born on June 20th, 1958. Manna Dey has been honored with the titles Padma Shri in 1971 and Padma Bhushan. He has given his voice in more than 75 movies.
