Songs of Meena Kumari
A very famous and prominent actress in Hindi Cinema, Meena Kumari was born on August 1st, 1932 at Bombay, Bombay Presidency, British India. Her actual name was Mahjabeen Bano but she became famous with the name of Meena kumari in Bollywood. She was born to a Muslim family of Ali Baksh and Prabhwati Devi. Her father was a Sunni Muslim and also a veteran of Parsi theater. He taught music and wrote Urdu poetry which Meena also adapted later in her career. Her mother was also involved in stage performances by the name of Kamini who turned to Islam and changed her name to Iqbal Begum. Meena’s father got her into the movies despite her mother’s protestations of wanting to go to school. Although Meena Kumari also wanted to go to school. She had acted in about ninety movies and was also regarded as “The Tragedy Queen” due to her perfection in tragic roles.
She had gained a reputation for playing grief-stricken and tragic roles and her performances have been praised and reminisced throughout the years. Meena Kumari had started her acting career at the tender age of seven where she was renamed as ‘Baby Meena’. She starred as a child artist in the movie ‘Farzand-E-Watan’ in the year 1939. Later she became practically the sole breadwinner of her family during the 1940s. She also played significant roles in the mythological movies such as ‘Veer Ghatotkach‘ (1949), ‘Shri Ganesh Mahima’ (1950) and also in fantasy movies like ‘Alladin and The Wonderful Lamp’ (1952). But she was shot to fame with the movie ‘Baiju Bawra‘ in 1952 where she played the female lead role which earned her the Filmfare Best Actress Award in 1953. She became the first actress to win the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her performance.
Later she starred and played some very successful roles of a suffering woman in Parineeta (1953), Daera (1953), Ek Hi Raasta (1956), Sharda (1957) and Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi (1960). By the time she has gained the title of ‘Tragedy Queen’ due to her performances as a suffering woman. Apart from her these roles, she had also played in some light hearted movies such as Azaad (1955), Miss Mary (1957), Shararat (1959) and Kohinoor (1960). One of her best performance she had given in the movie ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’ in the year 1962. She played as Chhoti Bahu who had always been immersed in alcohol. Also the role was considered as one of the best performances in the industry. As similar to this role, Meena Kumari had also started to drink which later ruined her career. In the same year, she made history by getting all the three nominations for Filmfare Best Actress Award, for her roles in Aarti, Main Chup Rahungi and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. She last starred in superhit movie ‘Pakeezah’ in 1972. She died on March 31st, 1972 of cirrhosis of the liver.
