Songs of Mohammad Rafi


One of the legendary bollywood playback singers Mohammad Rafi was born on December 24th, 1924 at Kotla Sultan Singh, Punjab. He was a versatile singer who was also called as ‘Rafi Saahab’. He sang for almost four decades and his magic of singing including Hindi, Urdu, Bhojpuri, Punjabi, Bengali, Marathi, Kannada and Telugu languages. Not only this he has also recorded English and Persian songs. He was born to the family of Hajji Ali Mohammad and was the youngest of six sons. He started singing by imitating chants of a fakir in his village during his childhood. Later in 1935, his father shifted to Lahore where he owned a men’s salon in Lahore’s Noor Mohalla. Rafi’s talent was first noticed by his brother-in-law named Mohammed Hameed. Rafi learnt Hindustani classical music from maestros Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan, Pandit Jiwanlal Matto and Firoze Nizami.

It was 1944, whe Rafi moved to Bombay. There he was introduced him to some of the leading film producers of the time such as Abdul Rashid Kardar, Mehboob Khan and actor-director Nazeer by poet Tanvir Naqvi. Later famous music director Naushad used him as part of the chorus. He started his career in the industry with the movie Pehle Aap (1944) where he sang the song “Hindustan Ke Hum Hain”. In next year, 1945 he sang “Aji Dil Ho Kaaboo Mein” in the movie ‘Gaon ki Gori’. In the same year he married his cousin named Bashira who was living in his village. Rafi appeared on the screen for the song “Tera Jalwa Jis Ne Dekha” in the film Laila Majnu in 1945. But he was shot to fame for the song “Tera Khilona Toota Balak” from Mehboob Khan’s Anmol Ghadi in 1946. Later he sang a duet with Noor Jehan in the movie ‘Jugnu’ in 1947. The song was “Yahan Badla Wafa Ka” which became hit.

The song “Sun Suno Aye Duniya Walon Bapuji Ki Amar Kahani” which was written by Rajendra Krishan, became a huge hit when Rafi sang the song. He was also invited by the Indian Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru to sing at his house and later he got a silver medal from him in 1948. The pair of Naushad and Rafi helped him in establishing as one of the most prominent playback singers in Bollywood. In 1952, he sang for the movie ‘Baiju Bawra‘, “O Duniya Ke Rakhwale” and “Man Tarpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj”. In late 1950s he was also approached by some famous composers of the era such as O.P. Nayyar, Shankar Jaikishan and S.D. Burman. He sang for S.D Burman in the movies Tere Ghar ke Saamne (1957), Pyaasa (1957), Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), Guide (1965), Aradhana (1969) and Abhimaan (1973). Also he has rendered his voice in some of the hit movies such as Naya Daur (1957), Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957), Kashmir Ki Kali (1964) etc. He also got his first Filmfare Award for the title song of Chaudhvin Ka Chand in 1960.
