Famous film director named Mehboob Khan directed movie ‘Mother India‘ was released under the banner of Mehboob Productions on February 14th, 1957. The movie is full of musical drama and family drama and the lead roles in the movie were played by Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar and Raaj Kumar whereas the supporting roles were played by Kanhaiyalal, Jilloo Maa, Kumkum, Sheela Naik, Mukri, Fakir Mohammad, Sitara Devi, Sajid Khan, Ram Shastri etc. The movie was produced by Mehboob Khan and the songs were rendered by some famous names like Shamshad Begum, Asha Bhosle, Manna Dey, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammad Rafi etc. The music of the movie was given by famous Naushad whereas the dialogues were written by S. Ali Raza and Wajahat Mirza. The movie is a landmark in the Indian Film Indusrty due to its storyline and did a good business at the box office.

Movie is about a mother who for the sake of truth and wellness of the villagers, kills her own son. In the beginging of the movie, a canal is prepared which has now finished and about to run with water. An old lady named Radha (Nargis) who is also the mother of the village, is asked to to open the canal. Later she remembers back to her past when she was newly married with Shaamu (Raaj Kumar). Radha comes from a poor family as well as Shaamu and the whole expenditure of the wedding has been given by Shaamu’s mother who raised a loan from the moneylender named Sukhilala (Kanhaiyalal). They agree to provide their three fourth of crop to the money lender in return of rupees five hundred. For this Shaamu works hard but unfortunately his arms are crushed by a boulder. He is shamed by his helplessness and is humiliated by others in the village and thinks that he is of no use in the house.

Then one day he decides to leave the house never to return. after this, Radha’s mother in law dies and the whole burden comes on her shoulders. Now she has to take care of her two childrens named Birju and Ramu. Then Sukhilala offers to help alleviate her poverty in return for Radha marrying him but she refuses to do this. By the time she again becomes mother of a child but during a storm in the village, her youngest child dies. All the villagers decide to leave the village but stay there on urging of Radha. Several years later her sons, Birju (Sunil Dutt) and Ramu (Rajendra Kumar) are young men but Birju pestering the village girls, especially Sukhilala’s daughter. On the other hand Ramu married and becomes father of a son. But his son passes away due to poverty. Here Birju attacks on Sukhilal’s family and in return the villagers chase him resulting him to be a bandit. He once again comes to kill Sukhilal and does so on the wedding of his daughter. Radha in return shoots his own son who later dies in her arms.
