Songs of Om Puri
A very famous and prominent actor in Bollywood named Om Puri was born on October 18th, 1950 at Ambala in Haryana. Later he spent early part of his life in Sanaur, Punjab. He was born to the family of Lala Nihal Chand and Ved Kaur and also had two brothers named Madan Puri and Amrish Puri both of whom also became actors. He also has a younger sister named Chandrakanta. He graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India. He is also an alumnus of the 1973 class of National School of Drama where Naseeruddin Shah was a co-student. He is famous for his appearance in both mainstream Indian Cinema films as well as art films. Also he is a very versatile actor and famous for his versatality. Not only Indian movies, he has also appeared in in British and American films and also received an honorary OBE.
Om Puri made his debut in the movies in Bollywood with the movie ‘Ghashiram Kotwal’ in the year 1976. The movie was based on a Marathi play having the same name. He was paid “peanuts” for his best work. Later he collaborated with his brother Amrish Puri as well as his co-student, Naseeruddin Shah in several movies such as Bhavani Bhavai (1980), Sadgati (1981), Ardh Satya (1982), Mirch Masala (1986) and Dharavi (1992). Also he has made two successful movies in Punjabi titled as ‘Chan Pardesi’ (1980) and ‘Long Da Lishkara’ (1986). He is highly acclaimed in the industry for his unconventional roles which he played in several Hindi movies such as Aakrosh (1980) and also in ‘Disco Dancer‘ (1982) where he played as Jimmy’s manager. Later he starred in another movie ‘Ardh Satya’ in the year 1983 for which he was highly appreciated.
Also the movie earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor in 1984 and before he has also won the same award for the movie Aarohan. The movie ‘Aakrosh’ in 1981 also won him Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award. He has starred in many British films also such as My Son the Fanatic (1997), East is East (1999) and The Parole Officer (2001). Also he has starred in some Hollywood films including City of Joy (1992), opposite Patrick Swayze; Wolf (1994) alongside Jack Nicholson and The Ghost and the Darkness (1996) opposite Val Kilmer. Apart from fims, he has worked in several TV serials such as Kakkaji Kaheen (1988) and Mr. Yogi (1989). Both the serials made Om Puri a comedy sensation. He also essayed comic roles in Hindi films like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron which reached a cult status, followed by Chachi 420 (1997), Hera Pheri (2000), Chor Machaye Shor (2002) and Malamaal Weekly (2006). He has also received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009.
