Songs of Pran
Pran Krishan Sikand is a famous and prominent Bollywood actor who is commonly known as Pran in the industry. He was born on February 12th, 1920 at Ballimaran in New Delhi. He is one of the most popular villains of Hindi cinema. He was born into a wealthy family of Kewal Krishan Sikand and Rameshwari. His father was a civil engineer and a Government civil contractor. He had three brothers and three sisters in the family. He is very talented in his studies from his childhood and due to the transferable job of his father, he has studied in various places including Dehradun, Kapurthala, Meerut, Unnao and Rampur. Later he completed his matriculation from ‘Raza High School’ in Rampur. He always wanted to be a professional photographer and this led him to Shimla where he played Sita in local staging of Ramlila. He married Shukla Ahluwalia on April 18th, 1945. He has two sons named Arvind and Sunil and a daughter named Pinky.
The first role of his career in any movie came in the year 1940 with a Punjabi film titled ‘Yamla Jat‘. There he played as a villain and the movie was a big hit of the year. His next two movies were ‘Chaudhary’ and ‘Khajanchi’ through which he became a rising star in the Lahore film industry. At that time many other villains were active such as Ajit and K. N. Singh but he made his own identity in this field. Pran made his Hindi Cinema debut in the year 1942 with the movie ‘Khandaan‘ in which he was casted as the leading man (hero) opposite very famous actress of that time named Noor Jehan who had earlier acted with him as a child artist. Before 1947, he had acted in twenty two films as a villain and then his career was paused due to the partition. After that he left Lahore and moved to Bombay on August 14th, 1947. But there he was unable to secure any role in the movies.
Eight months later in 1948, he got a major chance in Bombay Talkies film titled ‘Ziddi‘ in which he appeared alongside Dev Anand and Kamini Kaushal. The movie became a hit and Pran never looked back after this. Within a week he signed three more movies, ‘Grihasti’, ‘Apradhi’ and ‘Putli’. In this era, he also worked with legendary Dilip Kumar and Ashok Kumar. He turned to positive character roles with the movie Upkaar in 1967 where he played as Malang Chacha. Also his position got more strong in the blockbuster hits like Zanjeer, Don, Amar Akbar Anthony and Majboor. He was at his peak at that time (in 1970s) and he was also paid much more amount than Amitabh Bachchan in the movie ‘Don‘. His acting was so effective that people stopped naming their children Pran because of his villain roles. His favourite line “Barkhudaar” became immensely popular. He has won Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for Upkaar, Aanso Ban Gaye Phool and Be-Imaan in 1967, 1969 and 1972 respectively. He was also awarded Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997.
