Songs of Raaj Kumar


One of the famous and veteran bollywood superstar Raaj Kumar was born on October 8th, 1926 at Balochistan in Pakistan. His real name was Kulbushan Pandit and he was a Saraswat Brahmin - a Kashmiri Hindu. During late 1940s he came to Mumbai and there he became a sub-inspector in the Mumbai police. He changed his name to Raaj Kumar in early 1950s and also quited his police job. Later he turned to acting and acted in his debut movie named ‘Rangili‘. But unfortuntely his debute movie went unnoticed and he struggled for the next five years in several movies. Then he got first break through in the years 1957 with the superhit movie ‘Mother India‘ directed by Mehboob Khan. The movie was a classic and Oscar-nominated which shot him into the fame overnight. The performance of Raaj Kumar in the movie as Shamu who loses his arms in an accident was widely appreciated and he also got the reward for that by getting more offers for leading and supporting roles.

In 1960s, he married with Gayatri with whom he had three children. His son named Puru Raaj Kumar is also a bollywood actor and his daughter named Vastavikta recently made her debut in the bollywood in 2006. After the movie Mother India, Raaj Kumar gave many unforgettable performances in the movie like Shararat (1959) with Kishore Kumar, Paigham (1959), Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi (1960), Gharana (1961), Dil Ek Mandir (1963), Waqt (1965), Hamraaz (1967), Neel Kamal (1968), Pakeezah (1972), Lal Patthar (1971), Heer Ranjha (1971), and Hindustan Ki Kasam (1973). Mid 1960s was the peak of his career in which he gave many superhit movies and picked up Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Awards for Dil Ek Mandir and Waqt. He had worked with superstar actresses of that time like Mala Sinha, Waheeda Rehman, Vyjayanthimala, Meena Kumari etc. But towards late 1970s and 1980s, he appeared in lesser films.

During that period he started playing negative and central supporting roles such as father, uncle or elderly mobster. But also in that time he delivered some hit movies such as Chambal Ki Kasam (1980), Kudrat (1981), Ek Nai Paheli (1984), Marte Dam Tak (1987), Jung Baaz (1989) and Police Public (1990). He once again starred with legendary Dilip Kumar in the movie ‘Saudagar‘ in 1991 after three decades. Raaj and Dilip Kumar had previously appeared together playing brothers in Paigham (1959). One of his last biggest hit was ‘Tiranga‘ in 1992 in which he played Brigadier Suryadev Singh alongwith Nana Patekar. Raaj Kumar is one of the actors who had a unique voice and his way of delivering the dialogues was also different from other actors. On July 3rd, 1996 at the age of 69 years he passed away leaving his signature trademark voice.
