Songs of Raj Kapoor
Legendary Indian film actor, Raj Kapoor was born on December 14th, 1924 at Peshawar, British India which is now in Pakistan. He was born to the family of Prithviraj Kapoor and Ramsarni Devi and was the eldest of the four children in the Khatri Hindko family. The other three siblings were Shammi Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor and had a sister named Urmila Sial. His father was also a renowned actor and he was the grandson of Dewan Basheswarnath Kapoor. He married at the age of twenty two with Krishna Malhotra who was from Jabalpur. He became father of five children, Randhir Kapoor, born in 1947, Ritu in 1948, Rishi Kapoor in 1952, Reema Kapoor in 1956 and Rajiv Kapoor in 1962. All his sons were successful actors of their time. He is considered as the showman in the industry who has won eight Filmfare Awards. His movies Awaara (1951) and Boot Polish (1954) were nominated for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Raj Kapoor was associated Kidar Sharma at a film studio as a clapper boy in his early days. He first got the chance to act in a movie in 1935 when he was eleven years of age. He appeared in ‘Inquilab’. Later he appeared in several other films for the next twelve years. In 1947, he was framed to success with the movie ‘Neel Kamal‘ in which he played lead role opposie actress Madhubala. In the very next year in 1948, he established his own studio by the name of R. K. Films and became the youngest film director of his time. Then his first movie in which he starred, directed and produced was ‘Aag‘ in the same year opposite Nargis. The movie was unable to get a good response at the box office. Next year, 1949 he once again shot to fame with blockbuster movie ‘Andaz‘ in which he starred alongwith another superstar, Dilip Kumar. The movie was his first major success as an actor.
Later he went on to produce, direct and star in many box office hits such as Barsaat (1949), Awaara (1951), Shree 420 (1955), Chori Chori (1956) and Jis Desh Men Ganga Behti Hai (1960). In 1964, he produced, directed and starred in first film in colour titled ‘Sangam’. The movie ‘Mera Naam Joker’ was proved to be a disaster which led him in financial crisis. The movie took six years to complete and was released in 1970. But he once again bounced back in 1971 with the movie ‘Kal Aaj Aur Kal’ in which he appeared with his father, Prithviraj Kapoor and Babita. Also he launched his son Rishi Kapoor in 1973 in the movie ‘Bobby‘. His last major film appearance was in ‘Vakil Babu’ in 1982. Raj Kapoor was suffering from asthma in his later years and died on June 2nd, 1988 at the age of sixty three.
