Songs of Rajendra Kumar


One of the most successful actors in the 1960s and 1970s of Bollywood industry, Rajendra Kumar was born on July 20th, 1929 at Sialkot in West Punjab, British India which is now in Pakistan. He is also famous for his unique type of acting which he played in several movies of his time. His full name is Rajendra Kumar Tuli and was awarded the National Honour by late Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru simultaneously for the movies ‘Kanoon‘ (Hindi) and ‘Mehandi Rang Lagyo’ (Gujarati). He married with Shukla and the couple has a son named Kumar Gaurav who is also a hit actor of his time. They also have two daughters. Kumar Gaurav is married with Namrata Dutt, daughter of Sunil Dutt and Nargis. He also had done PHD and became Dr. Rajender Kumar. He was well known for not taking any mdicine in his entire life even though he died just eight days before his 70th birthday.

Rajendra Kumar made his appearance first time ever on the silver screen in the year 1950 where he starred in the movie titled ‘Jogan’. He appeared alongside Dilip Kumar and Nargis. But he got his identity in the Hindi Cinema with the blockbuster hit movie ‘Mother India’ where he played alongwith Sunil Dutt, the role of Ramu. Before this hit, he has also appeared in three movies ‘Toofan Aur Deeya‘ (1956), ‘Aawaz’ (1956) and ‘Ek Jhalak’ (1957) which also went successful. Two years later in 1959, he played the lead romantic role in the movie ‘Goonj Uthi Shehnai’ co-starring Ameeta which wa his first major success as a romantic leading man. The same year he gave a box office superhit ‘Dhool Ka Phool‘ co-starring Mala Sinha. The decade 1960s brought him a jubiliant success and he rised like no other star had risen. He had many successful box office hits under his belt.

Some of his hit films are Dhool Ka Phool (1959), Mere Mehboob (1963), Sangam (1964), Arzoo (1965), Suraj (1966) and Ganwaar (1970). In the year 1963, he starred in hit movie ‘Dil Ek Mandir’ for which he received Filmfare Nomination as Best Actor in 1963. Another hits for which he received Filmfare Nominations as Best Actor were Ayee Milan Ki Bela (1964), Arzoo (1965) and as Best Supporting Actor for Sangam (1964). Later in mid seventies, he was not able to fetch any offers as his many movies got flop at the box office. But still he managed to get a role in blockbuster movie ‘Saajan Bina Suhaagan‘ in 1978 opposite Nutan. After that he decided to play character roles in the late 1970s and 1980s. Now it was the time to introduce his son to the Bollywood and he produced, directed and also starred in the film ‘Love Story‘ in 1981 alongwith his son, Kumar Gaurav. He died on July 12th, 1999 due to cancer.
