Songs of Rajkumari Dubey

Born in 1924 in British India, Rajkumari Dubey was one of the finest playback singers of bollywood. She was very popular by her first name. Although she never got the opportunity to learn singing but the family in which she was born, always supported her and encouraged her. It was 1934 when she was just ten years of age and had recorded her first song for HMV. Later she started her career as a stage artiste. Once she was performing at a show when she was spotted by Vijay Bhatt and Shankar Bhatt of Prakash Pictures who liked her voice and encourage her to stop the acting and concentrate on singing as acting was spoiling her voice. She quit theatre on their advise and became an employee of Prakash Pictures as an actress and singer. She had starred in ‘Aankh Ka Tara‘ and ‘Turki Sher’ but soon got fed up by acting and decided to chose singing as her career.

Soon she quit Prakash Pictures and began playback singing for actresses like Ratnamala, Shobhana Samarth etc. Soon she became the first female playback singer of Indian Cinema. She had also sung many Gujarati and Punjabi songs. She easily picked up what her composers told her although she was not a trained singer to sing. Though her composers thought she was a trained singer. Later she also eastablished herself as a classical singer and excelled in singing and voice production within the framework of classical forms of thumri and dadra. She was compared with Shamshad Begum and Zohrabai Ambalewali while they had resounding voices with a high range but she had a soft voice with less range. Also she got some chances to sing with Mukesh but not with Mohammad Rafi as Lata Mangeshkar was a fast upcoming singer at the time. Later in 1943, she sang with Noor Jehan in the film ‘Naukar’.

She never sang with K.C. Dey, but she did sing songs composed by him as well a his nephew Manna Dey. Then Rajkumari got married with V.K. Dubey who was from Benares, Uttar Pradesh. Later he also joined Rajkumari in Bombay. In 1947, she got a chance to sing in film ‘Neel Kamal‘, ‘Mahal’ in 1949, ‘Bawre Nain’ in 1950 and ‘Hulchul‘ in 1951. But she was shot to fame for the movies ‘Bawre Nain’ and ‘Mahal‘ where she sang for the Indian actress Madhubala. She sang for famous O.P. Nayyar in 1952 in the movie ‘Aasmaan’ where she sang “Jab Se Pee Piya Aan Base”. After that she had gone to a long dark exile from the movies till music director Naushad spotted her in 1972, singing in the chorus for his background score for Pakeezah. But she refused to sing in the chorus to make ends meet. Therefore Naushad gave her an entire song to herself in the movie and the song was “Najariya ki Mari”. She last recorded her song “Har Din Jo Beeta” in the movie ‘Kitaab’ in 1977. She dies of poverty in 2000.
