A very famous and prominent actress in Hindi Cinema, Shabana Azmi was born on September 18th, 1950 at New Delhi, India. Apart from Hindi Cinema, she has also earned fame in parallel cinema and also is one of the leading actresses in this. She was born in a Muslim family of Kaifi Azmi and Shaukat Azmi. Her father was a renowned Indian poet whereas her mother was a well known stage actress. She also has a brother named Baba Azmi who is a cinematographer. She attended and completed a graduate degree in Psychology from St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai and later joined a course in Acting at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune. She eventually topped the list of successful candidates of 1972. Also she is a social activist, as she saw various social activities from her childhood in her house. She married Javed Akhtar on December 9th, 1984 who is a famed lyricist, poet and Bollywood scriptwriter.

Shabana Azmi entered in the film industry in the year 1974 with the movie ‘Ankur‘. There she played as Laxmi in the movie and it was a hit at the box office. Though she went on to sign on Khwaja Ahmad Abbas’s ‘Faasla‘ and began work on Kanti Lal Rathod’s ‘Parinay’ as well. But Ankur was her first release. Also she got that role of Laxmi when several top actresses refuse to do the role. But it made her stand in the que of successful actresses. She also earned the National Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in the movie. Later she starred in many movies such as Nishant (1976), Shatranj Ke Khiladi (1977), Sparsh (1980), Arth (1982), Masoom (1983), Mandi (1983) and many more. She went on to receive the National Film Award consecutively for three years from 1983 to 1985 for her roles in the movies- Arth, Khandhar and Paar.

In another movie titled ‘Mandi’ in which she played as Rukmini Bai, has been characterized by a real-life depiction. Also she chewed betel and put on her weight for this role. She has played several roles including mother, wife, young woman, aunt etc in many movies. She also acted in experimental and parallel Indian cinema. She starred in the movie ‘Fire‘ in 1996 where she depicted as lesbian. The movie created a controversy in the country. But apart from all this, she got international recognition with the Silver Hugo Award for Best Actress at the 32nd Chicago Film Festival. She was noted for her performance in some of the hit movies such as Junoon (1978), Sparsh (1980), Susman (1986), Sati (1989), Antarnaad (1992) etc. In her later career, she has also played some rememberable roles in movies Sorry Bhai! (2008), Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. (2007), Umrao Jaan (2006) and 15 Park Avenue (2005).
