Songs of Shabbir Kumar


A famous playback singer in Bollywood industry named Shabbir Kumar was born at Vadodara in Gujrat. He was one of the leading playback singers of 1980s and still is active in playback singing. He always admire the legend of Indian Cinema, Mohammad Rafi who is his mentor and he is dedicated to him. He has given his voice to many of the famous actors of the industry. He started his career in singing with a stage show named ‘Ek Shaam Rafi Ke Naam’ which was a tribute to Mohammed Rafi. His bonding with Rafi also gets deeper after an incidence when he attended Rafi’s funeral in 1980 and his pen fell into Rafi’s open grave which he understands as a divine message that he was to be Rafi’s successor. Also he is inspired from other singers like Anwar and Mohammed Aziz.

Shabbir was first noticed by famous music director, Usha Khanna. She liked his voice and style of singing and soon he got a break in the film ‘Tajurba’ in 1981. Then he got a major break through in 1983 when he was noticed by film director Manmohan Desai who was actually in search of the substitute of Mohammad Rafi, and then finds him. Later he recommended Shabbir to famous duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal. They gave Shabbir Kumar songs in the film Coolie, where he sang all the songs of the movie. The songs “Lambuji Lambuji”, “Sari Duniya Ka Bojh Hum Uthate Hain” and “Accident Ho Gaya” were so good that it created a scope for him nationwide. He was shot to fame with these movie songs. But Shabbir’s first released film with them was ‘Main Intequam Loonga‘ in 1982 whose songs also got famous.

He was first noted for his performance with legendary Lata Mangeshkar in a duet “Shaam Hai Ye Kuch Khoyi Khoyi” from Prem Tapasya in 1983. Also famous music director Anu Malik got him to sing for Rajeev Kapoor in his debut film Ek Jaan Hain Hum in the same year. Music director Rahul Dev Burman got him to sing all the five songs for Sunny Deol in the movie Betaab. The songs were noted and accepted in the whole country which made him more successful. 1980s was the decade in which he sang for almost all the leading music directors such as Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Rahul Dev Burman, Kalyanji-Anandji, Rajesh Roshan, Usha Khanna, Bappi Lahiri, Anu Malik, Ravindra Jain, Raamlaxman, Nadeem Shravan, Uttam Singh etc. He did playback singing for leading actors such as Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachhan,Dharmendra, Jackie Shroff, Rishi Kapoor, Jeetendra, Mithun Chakraborty etc. His last hit songs were “Gori Hai Kalaiyan” from Aaj Ka Arjun (1990) and “Sochna Kya” from Ghayal (1990).
