Songs of Sharmila Tagore
One of the most famous and prominent bollywood actress, Sharmila Tagore was born on 8th December, 1946 at Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh. She has won several National Film Awards and Filmfare Awards for her performances. She was born in a Bengali Brahmo family of Gitindranath Tagore. Her father was Deputy General Manager of the British India Company owner of Elgin Mills. Later she converted her religion into Islam and takes a new name of Begum Ayesha Sultana. Then she married with Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Nawab of Pataudi and the couple has two daughters named Saba Ali Khan and Soha Ali Khan and a son named Saif Ali Khan, a Bollywood actor who was born in 1970. She has lead the Indian Film Censor Board as well as chosen as an UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in December, 2005.
She is originally from Bengal and started her career in 1959 with a Bengali movie titled ‘Apur Sansar’ in which she played the role of ill-fated bride of the title character. She was just fourteen years of age at that time and the director of the movie, Satyajit Ray had to shout instructions to Sharmila during the takes. But none of this was reflected on the screen. Satyajit liked her acting and later in 1960, she was agains casted opposite Soumitra Chatterjee, a Bengali superstar, in the movie ‘Devi’. She made her Hindi Cinema debut with the movie ‘Kashmir Ki Kali‘ in 1964 which was directed by Shakti Samanta. The movie was a big hit which established her as an successful actress. Later she acted in some movies like Waqt (1965), Devar (1966), Anupama (1966), Nayak (1966) etc but she got a major hit in the form of ‘An Evening in Paris‘ in 1967. Sge appeared in the movie opposite Shammi Kapoor.
In late 1960s, she teamed up in several movies with superstar Rajesh Khanna in some of the movies like Aradhana (1969), Safar (1970), Amar Prem (1972) and Daag (1973). All the movies alongwith him went on for a big success. Two years later in 1975, she once again shot to fame with the movies like Chupke Chupke and Mausam which were among the highest grossing of the year. Also she won the National Film Award For Best Actress for Mausam in 1976. Her electifying performance in the movie ‘Amanush‘ in 1977 earned her some good reviews. Later she turned to some matured and supporting roles such as mother. She played the mother role of Sunny in the movie ‘Sunny’ in 1984. She was first time appeared with her son in the movie ‘Aashiq Awara‘ in 1993. Her last appearance was in ‘Morning Walk’ which was released in July, 2009.
