Shobha Gurtu was one of the famous bollywood playback singers who was born on February 8th, 1925 at Belgaum, Karnataka. Her real name was Bhanumati Shirodkar and she was born to the family of Menekabai Shirodkar who was her mother. Her mother was also a professional dancer and she was first trained by her mother. She became disciple of Ustad Alladiya Khan of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana and was trained by him in singing. She married with Vishwanath Gurtu and after that she took the name as Shobha Gurtu. She also got the supportive family of her husband as her father in law, Pandit Narayan Nath Gurtu, was a highly placed officer in Belgaum Police, scholar and a sitar player. She has two sons named Trilok Gurtu and Narendra. She was also known as Thumri Queen in the industry.

She made her bollywood debut as a playback singer with the movie ‘Pakeezah‘ in 1972 which became hit of the year. In next year, 1973 she got to sing in Phagun where she sang, “Bedardi ban gaye koi jaao manaao more saiyyaan”. The song became a hit and she was famous after that song. The movie ‘Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki‘ in 1978, she sang “Saiyyan Rooth Gaye” for which she also got the Filmfare nomination as Best Female Playback Singer for the song. Apart from Hindi Cinema, she also recorded in Marathi Cinema where she sang for films like Saamna and Lal Mati. She has sung for many established music directors such as Ghulam Mohammed, Naushad, S.D. Burman, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, O.P. Nayyar etc. and also sang with some of the famous playback singers like Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi etc.

She also travelled all over the world for concerts including Carnegie Hall, New York City, performing alongside musical greats and Pt. Birju Maharaj. It was the year 1987, when she was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and later awarded the Lata Mangeshkar Puraskar, Shahu Maharaj Puraskar and the Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar. Above of all this, she was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2002. The Queen of Thumri, Shobha Gurtu died on September 27th, 2004. Some of her famous movies in which she gave her voice are Murad-E-Dil, Pakeezah, Phagun, Faasle, Sajjo Rani etc.
