Famous and kegendary actor and director, Raj Kapoor directed movie ‘Shree 420‘ was released under the banner of R.K. Films Ltd on September 6th, 1955. The movie is full of romance and drama and the lead roles in the movie were played by Raj Kapoor, Nargis and Nadira whereas the supporting roles were played by Lalita Pawar, Nemo, Hari Shivdasani, Nana Palsikar, Bhudo Advani, Ramesh Sinha, Rashid Khan, S.P. Berry, Satyanarayan, Mansaram, Iftekhar, Tun Tun, Prithviraj Kapoor etc. The movie was produced by Raj Kapoor whereas the songs of the movie were rendered by Asha Bhosle, Manna Dey, Lata Mangeshkar, Mukesh, Mohammad Rafi etc. The music of the movie was given by famous Shankar-Jaikishan and the lyrics were written by famous Hasrat Jaipuri. The dialogues and the story of the movie was given by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas whereas screenplay was given by V.P. Sathe.

The movie is based on a young guy who goes to the city to earn something so that he can make his standard of living high and later becomes a swindler. In the begining of the movie, a young guy named Ranbir Raj (Raj Kapoor) comes to Bombay in search of earning to raise his living standard. He is an orphan and lives a poor lifestyle and wants to be rich as soon as possible. He comes to the city in a unique dress, wearing trousers, Japanese shoes which are torn and a red Russian cap. But still he has a Hindustani heart. Later in the city, he comes across a gamble place where he pawns his gold medal and decides to try his luck. As a result, he loses everything and the remaining balance is pick-pocketed. Therefore he goes to the beach where he meets with a beautiful young woman named Vidya Shastri (Nargis). Then he comes to know that she is a teacher who runs a private school.

Soon both of them fall in love with each other. After a short time, Ranbir gets a job in a laundry and one day given the task of delivering the clothes. When he goes to deliver some clothes to Maya (Nadira), she notices that he has a way with cards. Therefore she decides him to accompany her to a casino of sorts. There he wins the sum of rupees twenty thousand but unfortunately, the amount is pocketed by Maya. Soon after he is approached by a wealthy induatrialist named Sonanand Dharmachand (Nemo) who wants him to hire to work for him. Ranbir agrees and then he is on his way to a wealthy life. On the other side, Vidya comes to know about him and his wealthy lifestyle and she decides to break up with him. Sonachand teaches Ranbir that in order to make money one must never discriminate between the rich and poor. What he does not know that he is been used by Sonachand.
