Songs of Smita Patil


One of the prominent Bollywood actress, Smita Patil was born on October 17th, 1955 at Pune, Maharashtra. She was also very famous in parallel cinema alongwith actress and co-star Shabana Azmi. She was born to a Marathi family of Shivajirao Patil who was a Maharashtrian politician. Her mother was a social worker from Shirpur town of Khandesh province of Maharashtra State. She attended a Marathi-language school in her childhood. She has attended the Film and Television Institute of India, PuneShe was also an active feminist and a member of the Women’s Centre in Mumbai. She became romantically involved with the actor Raj Babbar who left his first wife named Nadira Babbar to marry Smita Patil. Later she got the tag of home breaker by the very Feminist organizations she had worked. She has a son named Prateek Babbar.

Smita first faced camera in her life as a television newscaster for Doordarshan Pune. The channel was the only one channel those days which was controlled by Indian government. She was first discovered by famous film director named Shyam Benegal. At that time she was a television news reader and was also an accomplished photographer. She entered in the film world in the year 1974 with the movie ‘Mere Saath Chal‘. She played as Geeta in the movie alongside another famous actor, Farooq Shaikh. The movie was just average rating. Later the next year, in 1975 she once again appeared in the movies ‘Nishant‘ and ‘Charandas Chor’. She played the role of Rajkumari in latter. She played a non conventional rebellious protagonist in most of the movies. Her presence on screen had a magnetic charm of its own. Her bold and rustic performance was unparalled in the history of Indian cinema.

She became famous with her role as Bindu which she played in the movie ‘Manthan‘ in 1976. She was widely appreciated by the critics for her performance. The movie became her turn in the industry and she started to get several offers. Later she appeared in many superhit movies such as Bhumika (1977), Aakrosh (1980), Namak Halaal (1982) and Chakra (1981). Among these superhit movies, the movie ‘Namak Halal‘ is considered her one of the best movie in which she played opposite Amitabh Bachchan alongwith Shashi Kapoor, Waheeda Rehman and Parveen Babi. Again her classical hits such as ‘Aakrosh’ and ‘Chakra’ were able to leave the impression in the industry. She also won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for Chakra. One of the hits under her belt was ‘Mirch Masala‘ in 1985 and the very famous song of this movie “Dil Hum Hum Kare” was also picturised on her which became superhit. She was awrded Padma Shri Award in 1985. She died on December 13th, 1986 after giving birth to her son.
