Songs of Suman Kalyanpur


One of the famous playback singers Suman Kalyanpur was born on January 28th, 1937 at Dhaka, Bangladesh. She is also known as Suman Hemadey. Her family moved to Bombay in 1943 and there she received her first musical training. Later she married with Ramanand S. Kalyanpur. She has a magical voice which was first noticed by Talat Mahmood when he heard Kalyanpur singing in a musical concert. He got highly impressed with her voice and recommended her to his music recording company, HMV. Then she was just seventeen years of age and she gave her voice as a playback singer in the movie ‘Mangu’ in 1954. That was her first playback singing where she sang the song “Koi Pukare Dheere Se Tujhe”. As she entered in 1954 in playback singing but she got her chance again, four years later in 1960 where she sang in ‘Miyan Bibi Razi’. She was also applauded for her singing and also noticed by many music directors.

Later in 1962, with movie ‘Baat Ek Raat Ki‘ she started her career as a playback singer and did playback singing for many movies such as ‘Dil Ek Mandir‘ (1963), ‘Dil Hi To Hai’ (1963), ‘Shagoon’ (1964), ‘Jahan Ara’ (1964), ‘Sanjh Aur Sawera’ (1964), ‘Noor Jahan’ (1967), ‘Saathi’ (1968) and ‘Pakeezah‘ (1971). By the time she has also paired herself alongwith some famous composers like Shankar-Jaikishan, Roshan, Madan Mohan, S. D. Burman, Hemant Kumar, Chitragupta, Naushad, S. N. Tripathi, and Ghulam Mohammed. But mostly she sang for Shankar-Jaikishan and Roshan. She has sung over seven hundred forty movie and non-movie songs. Her song “Na Tum Hamen Jano” from ‘Baat Ek Raat Ki’ and also “Chhodo Chhodo Mori Baiyan” from ‘Miya Biwi Razi’ shot her to fame. Also she has sang with Lata Mangeshkar a duet “Kabhi Aj Kabhi Kal Kabhi Parason” under the direction of composer Hemant Kumar.

She also has sang with male playback singers like Mohammad Rafi, Manna Dey, Mukesh, Talat Mahmood and Hemant Kumar. Some of her memorable duets are “Parbaton Ke Pattharon Par Shaam Ka Basera Hai”, “Tujhhko Dilbari Ki Kasam” and “Chand Takata Hai Idhar”. She has also recoreded some memorable songs with a classical base which included “Manamohan Man Mein Ho Tumhi”, “Mere Sang Ga Gunguna” and “Gir Gayi Re More Mathe Ki Bindiya”. For her precious voice, she has received three times the prestigious ‘Sur Sringar Samsad’ award for the best classical song in a hindi movie. Apart from hindi language, she has recorded songs for movies in various languages such as Marathi, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, Bhojpuri, Rajasthani, Bengali, Oriya and Punjabi.
