Songs of Suraiya Jamaal Sheikh
Suraiya Jamaal Sheikh was one of the prominent personalities of Hindi Cinema. She was a famous playback singer as well as actress and was popularly known by her first name Suraiya. She was born on June 15th, 1929 at Gujranwala in Punjab which is now in Pakistan. She was born to a muslim family and was the only child of her parents. She attended New Girls’ High School in Bombay but received religious teachings in Persian at home. Teaching of Kuran and Persian Literature helped her in making of her personality. She was not formally trained in music, yet she went on to become a successful singing actress. It is rumored that she was romantically linked with Dev Anand and also worked with him in about six movies. But her grandmother opposed this relationship and as a result she never married in her life.
Suraiya first made her acting debut in the year 1937 with the movie titled ‘Usne Kya Socha‘ as a child artist. Later she got prominent child roles due to his uncle named Zahoor who was then a popular villain actor. In 1941, she got a child role of young Mumtaz Mahal which she played in ‘Taj mahal‘. She became a singer in 1940s and 1950s when most of the songs were sang by the actors themselves. She sang for a children’s program on All India Radio in 1942 when a vaery famous music director, Naushad heard her voice and attracted towards her. He quickly chose Suraiya to sing as a thirteen years old for the film ‘Sharda’. Later in 1944, she started to play secondary roles in the movie such as Phool (1944), Anmol Ghadi (1946) and Dard (1947).
She sang the song “Jaag Ae Sonewaale” in the movie Tadbir in 1945 in which she also starred. The song was a hit among audiance. She was also liked by famous singer K. L. Saigal who had heard her voice during a rehersal in 1946 and later recommended by him to costar with Saigal in the movie ‘Omar Khayyam’ in the same year and ‘Parwana‘ in 1947. More opportunities arose for Suraiya after reigning actresses Noor Jehan and Khursheed Bano migrated to Pakistan following the 1947 partition of British India. She had an edge over her contemporaries like Kamini Kaushal and Nargis because she could sing her own songs. Her song “Chup Chup Khade Ho” from the movie ‘Badi Bahen‘ in 1949 was also successful. Another hit was “Aaja Balmare” from the movie ‘Parwana’ in 1947. In her last years, she used to live in her apartment on Marine Drive in Mumbai until her death on January 31st, 2004. She was seventy five years of age at that time.
