Songs of Udit Narayan
Prominent bollywood playback singer, Udit Narayan was born in 1955 at Birpur, Nepal. He has sang in different languages such as Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Oriya and Nepali language cinema and has given his voice in more than fifteen thousand songs in more than thirty different languages. He is a Maithil Brahmin by caste and currently lives in Mumbai. He is married to Deepa Narayan who is from Darjeeling, in 1985. She is also an accomplished Nepalese singer and both of them recorded an album together titled Dil Deewana. He has a son named Aditya Narayan who has started his career singing for child artists in 1990s. There is also a controversy linked with him in which Ranjana Jha claimed that she is the first wife of Udit Narayan. He at first rejected her claims but later agrees for a settlement with her.
He was trained by Pandit Dinkar Kaffini. He started his career by singing in Nepali, Maithili and Bhojpuri and he was offered a job at Radio Nepal in which he refused. Later he sang folk songs for Radio Nepal throughout the early 1970s. He moved to Mumbai in 1978 where he was trained in Indian classical music for six years at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. In 1980, he started his career with the movie ‘Unees Bees’. he was first noticed by famous music director named Rajesh Roshan. In that movie, he sang with his inspiration, Mohammed Rafi. Then he next sang in 1988 with the movie ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak‘ which earned him a Filmfare Award. His songs in the movie “Papa Kehte Hain”, “Ey Mere Humsafar” and “Akele Hain To Kya Gam Hai” shot him to stardom alongwith playback singer Alka Yagnik.
He has recorded for famous music directors named Rahul Dev Burman, Jagjit Singh, Anu Malik, Jatin Lalit, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Kalyanji-Anandji, Bappi Lahiri, Vishal Bhardwaj, A. R. Rahman, Nadeem-Shravan, Rajesh Roshan, Shankar Mahadevan etc. Also he has given his voice to stars like Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan etc. The song “Mehndi Lagake Rakhna” from the movie ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge‘ (1995) won him his second Filmfare Award after seven years. Same year he sang “Pardesi Pardesi” from Raja Hindustani for which he won National Award. He has worked in Nepalese films as well, in particular for composer Shambhujeet Baskota. Also he released his first private Nepalese album Upahaar in 2004. Some of her superhit movies in which he has lend his voice are : Dil (1990), Chamatkar (1992), Darr (1993), Mohra (1994), Ishq (1997), Taal (1999), Dhadkan (2000), Gadar (2001) etc.
