Songs of Usha Uthup


A popular Indian pop and playback singer named Usha Uthup was born on November 8th, 1947 at Chennai in Tamil Nadu. She is nvery famous for her pop style of singing which she gave in several moves of late 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Usha was born to a Tamil brahmin family of Sami Iyer, her father who later became the police commissioner of Bombay. She is fifth of the six children family having three sisters named Uma Pocha, Indira Srinivasan and Maya Sami and two brothers one of whom is named Shyam. She lived in the police quarters at Lovelane in Byculla in Bombay and there she attended a local school. Once she was thrown out of the music class as her voice was not getting fit. But her music teacher recognises the hidden talent in her and even though she was not formally trained in music but grew up in a music atmosphere. She has sung in 15 Indian languages and several foreign languages including Dutch, French, German, Italian etc.

Ushe made her first public appearance when she was just nine years of age. She was first took by her sisters to the musician called Hamir Sayani who gave her an opportunity to sing on the Ovaltine Music Hour in Radio Ceylon. There she sang number called “Mockingbird Hill” and after that she gave sevearal appearances followed through her teenage years. At the age of twenty, she started her career in singing in a small nightclub in Chennai called as Nine Gem where she wore a saari and leg callipers. Her that style and performance was very well accepted and the owner of the club asked her to stay on for a week. Then she moved to Calcutta (Kolkata) and began singing at night clubs such as ‘Talk of the Town’ and ‘Trincas’. Once she was singing at the Oberoi hotels at Delhi where famous superstar Shashi Kapoor visited the nightclub and he noticed Usha. Later he offered playback singing in the movie ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna‘.

The movie ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’ in 1971 became the debut movie for Usha as a playback singer where she was supposed to sing the song “Dum Maro Dum” alongwith Lata Mangeshkar. But she only got to sing an English verse. In her later career, she sang for some famous music directors such as R.D Burman and Bappi Lahiri in 1970s and 1980s. Some of her famous songs are “Koi Yahan Aha Nache Nache”, “Ek Do Cha Cha Cha” from Shalimar (1978), “Shaan Se”, “Hari Om Hari” and “Ramba Ho”. Her recent singing included the movie ‘Tashan’ in 2008 where she recorded for Vishal-Shekhar. Her movies as a playback singer are Dhol (2007), Jajantaram Mamantaram (2003), Ek Tha Raja (1996), Dushman Devta (1991), Bhavani Junction (1985), Hum Paanch (1980) and Purab Aur Pachhim (1970).
