Zanjeer, was influenced by the Hollywood blockbuster, “Death rides a horse”. The movie is based on the life of an underworld don named Teja ( Ajit ). The movie was directed by Prakash Mehra. The songs were rendered by Lata Mangeshkar, Mukesh, Manna Dey etc. The lyrics of the songs were written by Gulsan bawra. The movie was released in competition with Rishi Kapoor starrer Bobby. It started off slowly but manage to accelerate from the fourth day of its release. It ran to packed houses with a long queues at Mumbai’s Gaitey Complex. The lead actors of the movie are Amitabh Bachchan ( Vijay Khanna ), Jaya Bhaduri ( Mala ), Pran ( Sher Khan ), Om Prakash ( De silva ), Ajit ( Seth Dhram Dayal Teja ), Bindu ( Mona ), Iftekhar ( Police Commissioner Singh ).

Film starts with a flashback of Ranjit emerging from central jail and greeting the boss, Teja ( Ajit ). Ranjit went jail to rescue his family from Teja’s hands and took all the charges of Teja on himself. On a diwali night, Teja shoots down both Ranjit and his wife while his son manage to hide in a cupboard and watches the murder through a hole. He witnesses a masked man in black with a chain bracelet on his right wrist and a white horse locket hanging from his neck. The recurring image with which an adult, Vijay wake up from a nightmare sleep. Inspector Vijay ( Amitabh Bachchan ), who has undergone 11 transfer in a short span of time due to his notorious behavior. He has been grown up under the dedicated police office ( Iftekhar ), who hates crime and criminals. Mala ( Jaya Bhadhuri ) is a street smart knife-sharpener. Sher Khan ( Pran ) is good hearted pathan who runs a chain of gambling houses in the area under inspector Vijay. After few thrilling conflicts between them, they both becomes friend. One of Teja’s main activities, which has gone bypassed despite sharp attempts by the police. De Silva ( Om Prakash ), is the informer of police. Bindu ( Mona darling ) is the bar girl of Teja’s group.

One night Mala spots one of Teja’s drunken driver run over some street children. Vijay ask Mala to identify the guy. Teja in order to weaken the case tries to harm and threaten the Mala. She is even chased by Teja’s men and she finds a safe place in the form of Vijay’s house. Teja gets Vijay framed in a fake case which result in a six month jail term. After his release from Jail, Vijay decides to take revenge from Teja. The movie was selected for ten nominations at the filmfare awards and lifted 4 trophies -Salim Javed for the best story, again Salim Javed for the best screenplay, Gulshan Bawra for the best lyricist and R. Mahadik for the best editing. One of the most popular song of movie is “yari hai imaan meri zindagi” which was picturised on Pran and Amitabh.
