Dharmendra Singh Deol was born on 8 December 1935 in Phagwara in the Kapurthala District of Punjab and he is commonly known as Dharmendra, who is an award-winning Indian Bollywood film star and has appeared in more than 200 Hindi language films. His father is Kewal Singh Deol, a Sikh jat, and mother Satwant Kaur Dhanoa. His father was a school headmaster in the village of Lalton where the family later moved. He was married to Prakash Kaur and took divorce in 1954. He has four children with his first wife Prakash Kaur. Two sons, the Bollywood stars Sunny Deol ( Ajay Singh Deol ) and Bobby Deol ( Vijay Singh Deol ) and two daughters Ajeeta and Vijeta. He also supports political party- BJP. In 1997 he received the Film fare Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Hindi cinema. He is an actor, producer and politician. He is the only actor to have starred with almost all the actors of reputed Kapoor family. He is yet to star with Kareena Kapoor.

On August 21, 1979 he converted to Islam, changed his name to Dilawar Khan, and got married to actress Hema Malini, as his first wife, Prakash Kaur, refused to divorce him. In accordance with the Hindu Marriage Act it is illegal for a Hindu to get re-married when his first wife is still alive. Two Congress party-members have launched law-suits against him under section 420 of the Indian Penal Code in this connection as he failed to make a declaration of his religion when he joined the Janata Party. He is also the uncle of actor Abhay Deol, who is the son of his younger brother Ajit Deol. Dharmendra has gone on record saying he does not believe that the Mumbai film industry is a place suitable for girls. He has recently become active in politics. He was elected as a Member of Parliament in the 2004 general elections, from Bikaner in Rajasthan, on a Bharatiya Janta Party ticket. Dharmendra has rarely attended the Parliament when the house was in session, preferring to spend the time shooting for movies or doing farming at his farm house. He has also not participated in any debates or raised any queries. Along with actor Govinda, Dharmendra has been criticized for ignoring his duties as a Member of Parliament.

In 1997, Dharmendra won a Film fare Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Indian Cinema over many years. While receiving the award from Dilip Kumar and his wife Sayra Banu, Dharmendra grew emotional and remarked that he never received any Film fare award in the Best Actor category despite having worked in so many successful films nearly a hundred popular movies. He had the looks of a real gentle man, the masculine body of a he-man and when it came to his films, he had a very humorous touch in his dialog-delivery and the timing, especially In the mid seventies, he was voted as one of the most handsome men in the world, a feat only repeated by Salman Khan in 1997. He has won many award in his career in 2004 he was honoured for Best Contribution to Indian Cinema, in 2005 he received the Zee Cinema Award for Lifetime Achievement, in 2007 he received an IIFA Lifetime Achievement.
